Timothy Simmons, Augusta County School Board Member

Timothy Simmons, Augusta County School Board Member Authorized by Vote for Simmons I Board members are elected officers of the Commonwealth. Schools across the Commonwealth are not all the same.

The Board derives its authority from the Constitution of Virginia, the Code of Virginia, and the regulations of the State Board of Education. The School Board has many duties and is charged with appointing the superintendent of schools; setting the policies, guidelines, and procedures to ensure the proper administration of the school division; being responsible for the school division's financial

matters; ensuring that school laws are properly explained, enforced and observed; managing the property of the school division and providing necessary school buildings; appraising the effectiveness with which the schools are achieving the educational purposes of the board; and adopting goals and objectives for each aspect of the school system's operation. I believe that decisions affecting local school systems should be up to those local schools' boards and that Richmond’s overreach has gone too far. Many of us in Augusta County do not want politicians from across the State dictating policies for our local schools. What may be right for a school in the Tidewater area is not what is best for a school in Augusta County. I firmly believe in standing up for parental rights. Parents have an inherent right to raise their children and be involved in the decisions affecting their children. When parents send their children off to school, those children do not become wards of the State. Just because children go to a public school it does not mean we lose our rights as parents to be an integral part of their education. Parents absolutely should have the right to opt their children out of any learning material or activity that they find harmful to them. This includes material that questions beliefs or practices related to sex, morality, or religion. Parents should also have the right to review learning materials, including the source of any supplemental educational materials. I will advocate for and, along with other parents, create a Parents Bill of Rights that will outline parental rights pertaining to our children’s education within all Augusta County Schools. I DO Support:
- Protecting parental rights
- Increasing the community's input in school board decisions
- Maintaining our community's values within our schools and fighting back against Richmond's overreach
- Ensuring children in rural communities have access to high-speed internet to enhance their educational abilities
- Fiscal responsibility
- Supporting extracurriculars that enrich the lives of our children, such as FFA and athletics

Although the results of this election did not go in my favor, I am deeply humbled and grateful for every vote, every kind word, every door knocked, every sign placed, every donation, and every hour volunteered. To everyone who supported me throughout this campaign, please know how much your encouragement and belief in me have meant.

Congratulations to John Ocheltree on his victory, and to Daniel Whitmire on his win in the Beverley Manor District. I’m especially grateful that, with Dan’s election, an ACPS parent’s voice will continue to be represented on the board.

To my family — Rebecca and Owen — thank you for your love, patience, and unwavering support. I could not have made it through these past six months without you by my side. This journey has been an opportunity to teach my seven-year-old about integrity, honesty, and character, and that those qualities are far more important than winning any race.

As my time on the Augusta County School Board comes to a close, my commitment to our children, our schools, and our community remains steadfast. The issues we’ve worked hard to address — school safety, academic outcomes, and support for teachers and families — remain vitally important. I have every confidence that those continuing this work will carry it forward with dedication and purpose.

Finally, I want to thank the Lord for guiding me throughout this journey and placing me in a position of service. I pray for His continued favor and protection over our schools, our children, and our community.

A great event every year is the FFA Food for America Day at Buffalo Gap High School. Put on by older students, it’s a much anticipated, fun, educational event for elementary students, including my son and his classmates. 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

This was from a school field trip Owen and I went on in Rockingham County. We had a great time learning and exploring together. It’s always special getting to see the kids experience hands-on learning outside the classroom—those moments stick with them. Proud dad moment for sure!

Owen gave basketball a shot, but he quickly realized baseball is more his thing. Though neither of us missed a practice or a game, I’m pretty sure his favorite part each time was when it was over!

A huge shout of appreciation to all the coaches of every sport who pour so much into our kids throughout the year!

I had the opportunity to attend a rally for Governor Youngkin, where I got to meet Tim Anderson, a strong conservative/Republican leader and fellow fighter! It was great connecting with others who are passionate about Virginia’s future.
