⚠️ Did you know?

The popular squishy toys (especially gel-filled ones like NeeDohs) can explode or rupture if left in a hot car, causing painful burns. The extreme heat causes the gel inside to expand and the outer silicone to melt, making the toys unstable and prone to bursting.

https://www.cbsnews.com/chicago/news/hot-cars-squishy-toys-needohs-burn-risks/

What to do if a squishy explodes on your skin-

1- Cool the burn: Immediately run cold water over the affected area for at least 20 minutes. Do not use ice.

2- Do not peel the gel: The melted material and gel will likely stick firmly to the skin. Trying to pull or rip it off can tear the skin and worsen the injury.

3- Seek immediate medical help: Go to an urgent care center or emergency room where medical professionals can soak and safely flush the substance away with sterile saline.

Doctors are renewing a push to warn parents about burn risks from squishy toys like NeeDohs, especially during summer months when a hot car can cause similar danger to the social media trend of microwaving the toys.

⚠️HEAT ADVISORY IN EFFECT FROM 11 AM THIS MORNING TO 8 PM THIS EVENING (Tuesday, 8/14)

* WHAT...Heat index values as high as 105 expected.

* WHERE...Niagara, Orleans, Monroe, Wayne, Northern Cayuga, Oswego, Livingston, and Ontario Counties.

* WHEN...From 11 AM this morning to 8 PM EDT this evening, Tuesday 8/14.

* IMPACTS...Hot temperatures and high humidity may cause heat related illnesses to occur.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS-

Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors. Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any
circumstances. This is especially true during hot weather when car interiors can reach lethal temperatures in a matter of minutes.

Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. When possible reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat
stroke. Wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing when possible.

To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in
shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heatstroke is an emergency! Call 9 1 1 if you suspect someone is experiencing heatstroke.
