It is frustrating to invest time and resources into work that may ultimately be temporary, removed, or replaced as part of a future station project. However, we have a responsibility to restore the facility we have today while continuing to push for a long-term resolution that avoids unnecessary or duplicated costs.

Churchville Volunteer Fire Department (CVFD) was established in 1959 and has served Churchville and the surrounding community from its current location ever since.

The need to update or replace the Churchville station is not new. For years, CVFD and Augusta County have discussed the limitations of the current facility, including:
โœฆApparatus bays that cannot adequately accommodate todayโ€™s larger fire and EMS equipment.
โœฆLimited sleeping, office, and living space as career staffing has increased.
โœฆNo where for volunteers to sleep for overnight duty.
โœฆInadequate kitchen and dining space when the community room is being used for fundraisers or rentals.

Churchville was identified as a central location for emergency services on the west end of Augusta County. CVFD began developing plans to expand the station, purchased the neighboring Siron property, and secured approval for a $2 million USDA low-interest loan.

When CVFD determined they could not afford the loan payments alone, assistance was requested from Augusta County (multiple times). Assistance was entertained, but ultimately was not provided. CVFD continued looking for more affordable options until the COVID-19 pandemic slowed and eventually halted the project. Because the project did not move forward, the USDA funds were never received.

As career staffing at Churchville increased, so did the need for additional space. CVFD revisited the earlier plans and obtained updated pricing, which had nearly doubled to approximately $4 million.

CVFD purchased a steel building frame and began preparing the neighboring property for expansion, hoping the County would assist with the project.

The increasing cost and staffing needs made it clear that CVFD could not adequately fund the project through County contributions and donations alone.

CVFD shared their approximate $4 million building plans again with County representatives.

In April 2025, ACFR Chief Greg Schacht presented the Board of Supervisors with a collaborative proposal for a new Churchville station. The Board agreed to move forward with obtaining new plans for a County-funded and County-owned building, and ๐‚๐•๐…๐ƒ ๐š๐œ๐œ๐ž๐ฉ๐ญ๐ž๐ ๐ญ๐ก๐ž ๐ฉ๐ซ๐จ๐ฉ๐จ๐ฌ๐š๐ฅ.

Representatives from CVFD, ACFR, the Board of Supervisors, and County Administration worked together to develop plans that addressed the needs of both volunteer and career personnel. The resulting two-story station was estimated at approximately $17 million.

CVFD was later informed that the County would not build a station on land it did not own and that an alternative station could be constructed near Buffalo Gap School for career staff.

CVFD membership unanimously opposed separating volunteer and career operations and continued advocating for a collaborative solution. Leadership researched alternatives, including land leases and arrangements used successfully by other localities.

After the July 2026 flood brought renewed attention to the station, the building discussion intensified. On July 30, 2026, CVFD received a letter from BOS Chairman Slaven asking the organization if they understood what it would mean if the County took over ownership of its assets and operational control.

CVFD membership unanimously voted not to surrender ownership or operational control while reaffirming its support for the collaborative approach originally presented in April 2025.

On August 12, 2026, CVFD and representatives from other volunteer agencies attended the Board of Supervisors meeting. Discussion included reconvening the original committee to explore a possible land-lease agreement. The matter was postponed to allow the Board additional time to review CVFDโ€™s response.

โ€ผ๏ธFundraising Schedule Updateโ€ผ๏ธ

Due to the unexpected and unfortunate flooding at our station, we have made the difficult decision to adjust our upcoming fundraising schedule.

At this time, our BBQ Chicken Fundraiser is to be determined as we continue assessing our ability to safely host the event in accordance with the Virginia Dept of Health food safety rules and regulations.

We remain hopeful that our dining and living quarters will be fully restored by November, so for now, our Tenderloin Dinner and Community Christmas Dinner will remain on the schedule.

We sincerely appreciate your patience, understanding, and continued support as we work through this unexpected setback. We will share updates as soon as they become available.

Community Members,

We would like to address the condition of our station following the severe storm that passed through Churchville tonight. As some have experienced, heavy winds from the storm caused a significant amount of debris backup in the two storm drains located directly in front of the station. That backup paired with the significant rainfall caused an unprecedented amount of water to flood the station from the roadway. Personnel, both career and volunteer, have been working since the beginning of this event to remove any and all water from the station. A water restoration company has been contacted and will be arriving early in the morning due to the pending flash flood forecast until 4:45am.

We want to ensure our community members that emergency services will not be impacted by this incident. For health and safety reasons, the Augusta County Career Personnel have been relocated to Swoope Volunteer Fire Company for overnight housing and will continue to answer calls for service.

We are aware of posts circulating social media regarding this matter and we want to ensure our community that this is being handled appropriately.

Thank you for your patience and understanding.
