Firefighters in Whitley County from Columbia City, Columbia Township, Thorncreek Township and Churubusco/Smith Township Fire Departments along with representation from Avilla Fire Department participated in live fire training evolutions. A total of four evolutions were performed including fire attack, primary search for potential victims, back up crews, over haul and the incident command system.

Also participating in today’s live evolutions was Whitley County Sheriff’s Department dispatchers. The dispatchers were able to participate as if they were sitting behind a counsel but only this time they got to see the action in front of them and not through a radio.

Thank you to Whitley County EMA for providing bottled water and thank you to the City of Columbia City for the training grounds!

🚨 ‼️

Word is spreading that nearby county roads are starting to flood 💧 drive safe and use caution ⚠️

09/19/2026

Churubusco/Smith Township Firefighters were able to utilize the states SCBA confidence course this past week. This is an activity that puts our firefighters in tight spaces with no visibility to better prepare them for a real emergency. Needing to control your own breathing and communicating with your partner can be challenging in these scenarios and that is exactly what we were able to accomplish.

Use caution ⚠️ today and into tomorrow as flash flooding can occur on our county roads. If you encounter high waters 💦. Please turn around and go another way or you may get to see us in our suits.

⚠️ HIGH likelihood for additional flash flooding continues across Northern Indiana this morning into this afternoon! An additional 1-3" of rain is possible today (not including what fell already). Significant flash flooding has already been reported in Huntington, Wells, & Adams counties today.

PLEASE DO NOT drive through flooded roadways. Multiple water rescues have taken place already this morning.
