It is with a heavy heart that today I am withdrawing my candidacy for Cicero Town President. On Friday, the Circuit Court of Cook County decided that my name would no longer appear on the ballot due to a technical issue related to the Town of Cicero’s unique election rules.

With only three weeks left until the election, I believe continuing to appeal the decision is not in the best interest of Cicero voters because there is no timeline for the outcome.

I made the decision to run for Town President because for too long Cicero politicians have used town government to enrich themselves and their families and I thought it was about time we had political leadership that used town government to enrich the opportunities available to the Cicero families without political clout.

I took up this fight because my family and I came to this country for a better life, a life I was taught that was available to us if we were willing to work and sacrifice to have it. I worked and sacrificed to earn an education and professional opportunities that were never available to my parents. I also ran for Town President to provide an example to other young people about what is possible in America.

Both of my opponents were threatened by my candidacy, the prospect of the choice I offered and the example I provided. Thus, instead of letting voters choose on Election Day, they took the fight to court to press their advantage with the election rules they created to prevent electoral competition.
Cicero has lost.

Now Cicero’s choices are the current incumbent or a Latino version of the incumbent, they are two sides of the same coin.

Change never comes easy, particularly in Cicero. But it will come. As much as I wanted change to come now; I know it will come on God’s timeline.

I am proud of the effort my campaign put forward. I am honored to have worked with so many Cicero residents committed to making our community better, safer, and more equitable.

Finally, I want to express my heartfelt thanks to my family who supported my decision to undertake this challenge, to the residents who wanted a choice in this election including those that signed my nominating petition, and to the volunteers who worked diligently on our campaign-- in particular to the young voters who saw our campaign as their opportunity to demonstrate their readiness to lead.

I am disappointed with the outcome, but not discouraged because I know our ideas will ultimately win the day. History is on the side of those who empower their fellow man, not exploit him. The fight for A Better Cicero continues.

Amen.

Grant unto me, my Lord, that with peace in mind I may face all that this new day is to bring.

Grant unto me grace to surrender myself completely to Thy holy will.

Instruct and prepare me in all things for every hour of this day.

Whatsoever tidings I may receive during the day, do Thou teach me to accept them calmly, in the firm conviction that all eventualities fulfill Thy holy will.

When things unforeseen occur, let me not forget that all cometh down from Thee.

Bestow upon me, my Lord, strength to endure the fatigue of the day and to bear my share in all its passing events.

Guide Thou my will and teach me to pray, to believe, to hope, to suffer, to forgive, and to love. Amen
