General information

OUR MISSION Cicero Area Project mission is to promote empowerment of people through education, advocacy and respect for cultural diversity. Our purpose is to strengthen families to enhance the positive quality of individual, family addressing the root causes of poverty and disparities in our society. OUR DEVELOPMENT The Cicero Area Project, a non-profit, community-based organization is now working in the Cicero Community. It was founded in 2008 by a group of Latino residents concerned about community conditions affecting the growing Latino families in the area and the relative absence of services tailored to address their needs. CAP has served the changing and increasing needs of its residents, primarily youths and parents in areas of violence prevention, adult education, and job development. CAP is focusing on tutoring, youth leadership, social services, youth work and others. It combines social services, advocacy and community organization to improve community conditions for Latino and other families residing in its area. CAP believes that, high poverty rates, few employment opportunities for youth and now for adults as well, limited resources, high dropout rates and low-educational levels of adults, as well as non-resident status of many Latino parents provide ample ground for incidents of violence to manifest themselves, both at home and on the street. CAP INITIATIVES Youths programs are tailored to obtain active participation from youth people and their families. We believe that youth violence solution must be tailored and driven by communities themselves. And in order to prevent youth violence we need to implement programs developed by youth coalitions. Cicero Area Project offers the following programs: • Mentoring • Engaging Families • Conflict Resolution • Academic Tutoring • Youth Leadership CAP youths conducted survey to identify attitudes and culture on the community towards violence prevention. LEADERSHIP PRGRAM CAP’s Education and Leadership Department provides courses, workshops, and educational materials to help them improve their quality of life. The Department also develops in-house curricula based on popular education methodology, which uses a participatory learning style and gears material to the life experiences of the students. Most but not all of CAP’s classes are fee-based. Current classes include financial literacy, GED preparation, Spanish literacy, computer classes, vocational training, and English as a Second Language for Speakers of Other Languages. LEGAL PROGRAM CAP’s Legal Program, operating in our site as Legal Nights, seeks to improve the quality of life and legal justice for Latinos and Cicero low-income families through legal education, legal services, and advocacy projects. We offer legal consultations on areas of immigration, Loan Modification and Bankruptcy, Criminal Law, Family Law. We also provide legal assistance to low-wage tenants on landlord/tenant issues. In addition CAP’s performs outreach to inform workers about essential worker’s rights and compensations. SOCIAL SERVICES PROGRAM CAP’s provides information about the availability of basic social services such as free or low-cost medical programs, mental health care, legal services and emergency shelter. We also provide information and refer clients to government and private social service programs for which they and their families may be eligible. Our organization assists clients who have problems receiving assistance and benefits. CAP’s also translates and notarizes legal documents such as birth certificates, marriage certificates, school transcripts and other important papers..
