HR 433 - Violence as a Disease
In order for violence to be addressed effectively, it must be labeled and treated as a public health crisis. Policies like R3 (Restore, Reinvest, and Renew) are needed in order to provide communities that have historically suffered from divestment, poverty, and incarceration with smart solutions that can solve the plague of violence.
Congratulations to our raffle winner Karen Montiel, thanks to all who attended our Spring Health Fair at MacNeal Hospital.
It was a successful week in Springfield! I’ll be knocking on doors next week to check-in and talk to local families about the issues facing our community and what I’m doing in Springfield to address them. Hope to see you out there!

Happy to announce that the RISE Act passed the House today! This legislation is about equity for ALL students, ensuring that regardless of your race, immigration status or gender identity, you are valued and supported by our state. #RISEAct
Springfield update: This week, I passed legislation that expands access to English classes, ensures English interpreters are able to assist parents in school meetings, equips our youth with media literacy skills, and ensures health care coverage for children. Next week, I’ll be working on legislation to ensure financial aid equity for our minority and LGBTQ youth.

His activism helped spark a movement for Latino civil rights in our country which ultimately led to improved farmworker conditions, and greater Latino representation in the media, elected office, and throughout organized labor.
#DreamActNow State-level action to combat Donald Trump's bigotry
This week I was joined by a powerful coalition of women to call on Congress to pass the Dream Act, as well as to highlight the work to combat Donald Trump's bigotry. Together we're working to stop notary fraud, ensure housing and health care rights, ban for-profit detention centers, and the petition of guardianship for minors.
Great news, we successfully overrode Bruce Rauner’s shameful veto and the VOICES Act is now law! This legislation will create a consistent process across IL, so that survivors of domestic violence and other crimes are treated fairly by law enforcement. Please get in touch if you have any questions!
