On Tuesday, July 7, Cimarron Volunteer Fire Department responded to two fire incidents in the greater Cimarron area.

CVFD was initially dispatched to assist Philmont Fire Department with a report of a single tree snag fire soldering with smoke but no flames visible near Vaca Camp on Philmont Scout Ranch property.

Shortly thereafter, at approximately 17:30 hours, CVFD was dispatched to the area of US Highway 64 and Forest Road 1950 in response to reports of heavy black smoke visible, possibly coming from the Valle Vidal.

CVFD personnel joined crews from Vermejo Fire Department, New Mexico Forestry Division, and Philmont Fire Department on what became known as the Plaza Canyon Fire. Thanks to a timely and efficient response from all departments, the fire was fully contained at approximately 8 acres.

Thank you to all crews and departments involved for their work and assistance on these incidents!

The Bernal Trail Fire was started by lightning on Vermejo Park Ranch earlier this week.

Personnel from Cimarron VFD were glad to assist our colleagues from the Vermejo and Red River Fire Departments and New Mexico Forestry Division with suppression efforts.

The fire was estimated to be roughly 100 acres in size but is now 100% contained. Mop up efforts are ongoing, although CVFD no longer has crews on scene.

On Friday, June 5, Cimarron Volunteer Fire Department was thrilled to join our friends from Philmont Fire Department, Colfax County Sheriff's Office, New Mexico, New Mexico State Police, and Cimarron Community Ambulance for the 2026 Summer Reading Program Kickoff at Village Park!

Participating kids were able to explore fire, ambulance, and police vehicles and learn about the work of first responders. After a game of kickball, they even had a chance to cool down on a hot summer day with a good soak from the fire trucks!

Special thanks to the Cimarron Library and NE Bookmobile team for putting on this event and the invitation to participate!
