Casa del Gavilan

Casa del Gavilan Exceptional views, top notch hospitality, full breakfasts and hiking right out the backdoor.

Nestled in the foothills of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains near Cimarron, NewMexico, is the historic inn, Casa del Gavilan. A place of spirit--where hawk and eagle soar--this grand adobe villa was built about 1912 for Jack and Gertrude Nairn, formerly of Hartford, Connecticut. When completed, artists and writers from far and wide came to enjoy the Nairns' elegant hospitality and to capture the maj

estic beauty that is New Mexico. With twelve-foot high ceilings, vigas, and eighteen-inch thick walls, Casa del Gavilan (House of the Hawk) is a showplace of Pueblo-revival architecture exhibiting artwork and sculptures by Frederick Remington, Charles Russell, Robert Redbird, and others. Completely surrounded by Philmont Scout Ranch, and a mile from Philmont's base camp, the Casa del Gavilan (also known as the Nairn Place) offers exceptional views of the Sangre de Cristo mountains, hiking trails, and the peace and tranquility so rare these days. The guest rooms all have private baths and a full breakfast is served daily.

Casa guest Lisa Allen recently captured this early morning photograph of hummingbirds swarming the feeder under the portico of the Casa del Gavilan. With the unusually warm winter the hummers seemed to arrive early - and hungry! They are gobbling up the sugar water faster than we can refill the feeders! Their annual arrival from Central America signals the beginning of the summer, followed shortly by the arrival of thousands of Scouts to hike the many miles of mountain trails of Philmont Scout Ranch.

Plan a stay with us to enjoy playful antics of the hummingbirds, a beautiful springtime in the Cimarron area, and the uncommon tranquility of the Casa del Gavilan Historic Inn. Reservations are available online at https://casadelgavilan.com/reservations or by phone at 575-376-2246.

After a winter that was barely noticeable in Cimarron, Mother Nature decided to make up for a bit of lost time yesterday with a late winter bout of snow and temperatures in the mid 20s. The Casa stayed warm and cozy during the storm. A roaring fire in the fireplace, and a hearty breakfast on the table, takes the chill off the early morning for our guests. As with most late spring storms the cold weather won't last long. Temperatures for Friday are forecast to be in the 70s, followed by the 80s early next week.

Spring is just starting to break out in Cimarron. The cottonwood trees are leafing out, and the gambel oaks will follow shortly. Soon, tents at Philmont Scout Ranch will start to pop up like spring flowers as they prepare for another busy summer equipping and training young Scouts - both male and female - for 10 day backpacking trips in the Sangre de Cristo mountains that surround the Casa del Gavilan.

Plan a stay with us to enjoy the uncommon tranquility of the Casa del Gavilan Historic Inn, and a beautiful springtime in the Cimarron area. Reservations are available online at https://casadelgavilan.com/reservations or by phone at 575-376-2246.

A Winter Solstice sunset from the front patio of the Casa del Gavilan Historic Inn. This view is looking east, over the high plains toward Oklahoma and Texas. A unique feature of the Cimarron area is that sunsets are often as dramatic, if not more so, looking east as they are watching the sun settle slowly behind the Tooth of Time and the Sangre de Cristo mountains to the west. So the next time you're relaxing in the Adirondack chairs in the back pasture of the Casa, marveling at the spectacular sunset, don't forget to look over your shoulder.

Wishing all of our friends, neighbors, and guests a very special holiday season with family and good friends. Reservations for the 2026 season will open January 1st. The Casa will be open from April 17th through October 31st. We look forward to seeing many of you again in 2026.

We had a furry visitor to the Casa del Gavilan (or at least to the front gate) earlier today. He/she was probably headed to do some "shopping" at the prairie dog village along the drive. This fox usually shows up in the late evening, well after dark, crossing under the gate on the nightly rounds. Perhaps due to the temperatures in the mid 20s last night, the fox decided to put off the hunt until it warmed up a bit.

While one might be excused in believing this is a cross between a gray fox and a red fox, the two species cannot interbred due to chromosome differences. This is likely a red fox, as identified by its white-tipped tale. Gray fox have black tipped tails. Both species can share a mix of red, brown and gray coloring, so they can be difficult to identify with out the tail "tip off". While gray fox can climb trees (believe it or not) their red cousins are stuck on the ground.

The National Wildlife Federation states "The smallest population (of the red fox) is in the Southwest, where it is very rare to see a red fox." While it may be rare in the Southwest, it's not uncommon to see red fox in the Cimarron area. We've had them in the courtyard on rare occasions. One of our innkeepers once, while sitting on the front patio, witnessed a fox stalk and nab a magpie along the small oak trees in the front yard. Fox have recently been leaving tracks in the soft dirt mounds made by gophers around the Casa while looking for an open gopher hole that might lead to dinner. Personally, I'm rooting for the fox over the gophers!

As the 2025 season winds down at the Casa del Gavilan Historic Inn we're trying out some new recipes for the 2026 season. This breakfast of southwestern quiche served with potatoes, biscuits, kiwi and melon was a big hit with our guests this morning, and will certainly be on the menu for 2026.

Our 2025 season will wrap up on November 4th, after which we will close for the winter. The Casa del Gavilan will reopen early to mid April for the 2026 season. Reservations for the 2026 season will be available starting on January 1st, 2026 at https://casadelgavilan.com/reservations

We would like to take a moment to thank all of our many guests that permitted us to share with them the hospitality of the Casa during the busy 2025 season. We wish our guests, friends, and neighbors the best over the holidays and through the winter months. We look forward to seeing you again next season!

Fall is always a glorious time in the Cimarron country! This stand of cottonwoods welcome drivers and they head west into Cimarron Canyon, offering a glimpse of the wonders yet to come on the way to Eagle Nest, Red River, and Taos. Touch-Me-Not Mountain is in the back right of the photo, while the mountains west of Deer Lake Mesa, with the burn scar of the 2018 Ute Park Fire, are on the left.

The trees still show a hint of green, so it's not too late to enjoy the spectacular fall colors of Cimarron and the Casa del Gavilan Historic Inn. A face only a mother can love!! While we haven't seen many of our very large adult toads wandering around the courtyard this summer, there seem to be enough of them to produce quite a few offspring. This little fella was setting up housekeeping in one of the gopher holes near the Casa. The gophers soften up dirt that the toads can then burrow into during the cool nights this time of year.

While the toads aren't much to look at, they do keep down the mosquitos and other insects that otherwise might become a nuisance. I'll leave the identification of species to someone better versed in the amphibians of New Mexico. Please let us know if you can identify the species of this little guy.
