When storms hit Cincinnati, every drop of rain matters. Cincinnati has experienced some intense storms this summer — bringing flooding, sewer backups, and property damage to neighborhoods across the city. Alongside long-term investments in sewer maintenance and upgrades, green infrastructure gives our city a way to soak up stormwater fast — before it ever reaches the drains.

- Green infrastructure can have a lot of different looks and it can be small scale:
- Trees soak up stormwater and offer important shade and cooling.
- Green roofs act like a sponge on top of buildings, with water being absorbed by vegetation.
- Permeable pavements let water seep into the ground rather than running off
- Rain barrels capture water runoff from a building’s roof allowing the water, to be easily be stored and later used to water plants.

These are just a few examples of how residents have installed green infrastructure projects in their neighborhoods through the GCP Seeds of Change Grant Program. Small-scale, yet big results.

Large scale green infrastructure projects also matter. The City’s Metropolitan Sewer District completed a major green infrastructure project in South Fairmount called the Lick Run Greenway, which captures ~500 million gallons of stormwater every year through bioengineered streams, stream restoration, bioswales, and detention basins, working alongside new storm sewers.

Every green space is doing its part to soak up the storm.

Cincinnati youth ages 15-24 can apply for mini-grants $1,000-$5,000 to lead sustainability projects in their community or at their school.
