Being alone and feeling lonely are not the same thing, though they often get treated like they are. Plenty of people live alone and feel richly connected. And plenty of people are surrounded by family all day and feel profoundly isolated.

For older adults, loneliness tends to be less about physical proximity and more about feeling purposeful, seen, and engaged. A person can sit in a full living room and still feel like they've disappeared from the world a little. Loneliness in older adults has real, measurable effects on health, cognition, and quality of life.

The question isn't whether your loved one is alone. It's whether they feel like they matter to someone's day. A quality senior day center helps with that by providing a safe place to reminisce and enjoy time with others the same age who remember the same music and laugh at the same jokes.
