Additionally, Fair Housing accounts for equal opportunities for financing or other related transactions and in the provision

of housing-related services. Passed in 1968, the Federal Fair Housing Act establishes the right for a person to choose where they live and to live there with dignity and without discrimination. The Fair Housing Act ensures the accessibility of all forms of available housing to all people regardless of certain racial, cultural or physical factors. Federal, state, and local laws protect your equal housing rights. The Federal Fair Housing Act prohibits discrimination based on: race/color, religion, gender (including sexual harassment), national origin, familial status, and disability (physical and mental). The state of Ohio prohibits housing discrimination based on ancestry and military status. Cincinnati prohibits discrimination based on sexual orientation, marital status, and Appalachian origin.

When a housing provider asked tenants using Housing Choice Vouchers to leave within 30 days, many disabled tenants living in modified units faced significant barriers to finding suitable housing. After tenants requested additional time as a reasonable accommodation and were denied, HOME began an investigation, which found the provider lacked a reasonable accommodation policy and that leasing staff were not properly trained.

HOME’s advocacy led to meaningful change: evictions were dismissed, tenants received additional time to find suitable housing and monetary damages, and the provider agreed to create and distribute a reasonable accommodation policy.
