We provide free civil legal assistance to resolve barriers to family and economic stability for low-income people in Butler, Brown, Clermont, Clinton, Hamilton, Highland, and Warren Counties in Southwest Ohio. • Child HeLP: A medical-legal partnership with Cincinnati Children’s Hospital promoting children's health and well-being through effective legal assistance
• Guardian ad Litem: Protecting neglected and abused children through vigilant legal representation
• LawLink: Helping domestic violence victims and their children with comprehensive legal assistance
• Education Advocacy: Ensuring that low-income children and foster kids have an opportunity to succeed in school
• Stabilizing Neighborhoods through Secure Housing: Reducing southwest Ohio's high foreclosure rate and its impact on individual homeowners and neighborhoods
• Clearing Legal Hurdles to Employment: Solving problems that interfere with job retention and family stability

September is National Kinship Care Month!

Kinship caregivers are relatives or family friends who care for children when their biological parents are unable to do so.

Legal Aid provides comprehensive legal services for kinship families. Our Kinship Care Team includes advocates from multiple practice groups who help these families obtain legal authority so they can make medical and educational decisions for these children.

Managing Attorney Kelly Malone stated, "We are deeply inspired by the love, dedication, and sacrifices our clients make for the children in their care. It is our privilege to provide the legal services that help complete the foundation these children need to thrive."

Katie Schulte is a Staff Attorney and Ohio Access Justice for All Fellow. Her fellowship focuses on improving health outcomes through housing advocacy for families in Brown, Clinton, and Highland Counties.

In a recent case, Katie advocated for a family whose home was infested with mold, making it unlivable. After multiple requests, their landlord failed to make necessary repairs. Katie helped the family file a rent escrow application and worked with the local health department regarding the unsafe conditions. Katie then negotiated directly with the landlord to address the problems at the property, resolving the issues without further litigation. Importantly, she secured thousands of dollars in rent abatement for the family. As a result of her work, the family's residence is now livable and safe.

As a VLP volunteer attorney, you’ll earn CLE credit for eligible pro bono service and receive malpractice insurance coverage for your VLP-referred cases. The VLP offers volunteer trainings and a free annual CLE to active attorneys. Experienced Legal Aid attorneys are available to provide support if you need guidance in an unfamiliar area of law. And volunteers can also reserve Legal Aid conference rooms to meet with clients. Most importantly, you’ll have the opportunity to use your legal experience to make a difference in the lives of individuals and families in our community.
