A reminder, Newtown Road, south of Mercer’s Point Drive, CLOSED late this morning to traffic heading downhill towards Clough. Newtown Road will remain OPEN for traffic turning off Clough Pike going uphill. If using the Bartels Road detour, please plan accordingly, especially around school arrival & dismissal times (7:30am-9:15am, and 2:45pm-4pm).

ROAD CLOSURE TIMING UPDATE - Newtown Road at Clough Pike

Due to weather-related impacts, the planned closure of the southbound lane of Newtown Road, between Clough Pike and Mercer’s Point Drive, has been postponed until Tuesday, Sept. 8 (after Labor Day weekend).

A detour, of up to 60 days, will be provided by way of Clough Pike and Bartels Road. Newtown Road heading northbound, or up the hill turning off Clough Pike, will remain open. The road work is part of the Clough Pike and Newtown Road intersection improvement project.

Work began in early June along Clough Pike for the sidewalk, as well as stormwater improvements and the roadway widening. With that nearly complete widening on the north side of the road, which entails reconfiguring the Newtown Road approach to create left turn lanes, can begin. Fortunately, traffic will be maintained on Clough Pike and one lane of “uphill” lane will be provided on Newtown Road.

Motorists are urged to seek alternate routes and use caution in traveling through this narrow construction zone.

Open Houses Scheduled for Miller-Leuser Log House and Clark Stone House

Enjoy a glimpse of Anderson Township's earliest days, as the Anderson Township Historical Society and Anderson Township open two historical gems along Clough Pike from 1-4 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 20, as a part of the Ohio History Connection's "Open Doors" program.

The Miller-Leuser Log House at 6550 Clough Pike and the Clark Stone House at 6840 Clough Pike will be open to the public, offering a look of two of the oldest structures in Southwest Ohio and a sense of life on the frontier when Ohio achieved statehood.

The log house, one of the oldest dwellings in Greater Cincinnati, was built in 1796. The stone house, likely the oldest standing stone house in our region, was built a decade later, completed around 1803.

Happy Labor Day!

Labor Day, the unofficial goodbye to summer, can be traced back 144 years to New York City’s Union Square on Sept. 5, 1882. The holiday is said to be created as a way to appease city workers who had been striking and had even broken out in violence. Today, the holiday pays tribute to achievements and contributions of American workers.

In honor of the day, Anderson Township’s government offices are closed today.

“Street Corner” Mailboxes

Once a staple on many corners in Anderson, and across the country, the four-footed free-standing mailbox became a staple of suburban America in the early to mid-1900s. While the box’s colors changed over the years, the standard blue that may may remember was adopted in 1971.

The changing nature of consumer habits have decreased the volume of mail, and only a few exist in Anderson. This image is from Salem and Alnetta … can you share the location of others in our community? Or maybe you remember one fondly from the past, love to hear those locations, in Anderson or wherever that memory may take you!

Stay safe this holiday weekend! While you celebrate Labor Day, the Hamilton County Emergency Management Agency encourages you to keep these safety tips in mind:

• Leave fireworks to the experts! Fireworks start an average of 18,500 fires and cause thousands of injuries per year.
• Never leave a grill or cooking equipment unattended. Always keep children and pets at least three feet away from equipment at all times.
• Supervise children while in and around pool areas.
• Keep your pet indoors or leashed during firework events and include their information and picture on your Smart911 Safety Profile in case they are lost. (Obtain a safety profile at www.AlertHC.org.)
• Sign up for Alert Hamilton County to get weather alerts sent straight to your phone or email in case of showers. Get alerts, also at www.AlertHC.org.

If you previously provided your information to a city notification system, you still need to register in Alert Hamilton County to ensure you receive emergency notifications.

America 250 events continue in Anderson Township in September, the next of which is Saturday, Sept. 12th with a community potluck picnic and concert at the Urban Farm!

A Fair of the Arts Set for September 19

If you’re making plans for fall activities, don’t forget the Anderson Park District’s 25th annual A Fair of the Arts. It’s scheduled from 4-8 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 19 at Beech Acres Park, 6910 Salem Road.

The A Fair of the Arts event features live music including Grady Burton at 4 p.m. followed by Anna and the Deeper Well at 5:45 p.m.
