Wild winds, thunderstorms, and lightning prevailing from the west,
Even a few tornadoes touched down, leaving people to worrisome unrest,
This happened a couple nights ago, in the midst of the night,
I’m sure the sirens and alerts gave many people a troubling fright.

But alas, it’s over, and all those folks affected sure are a trooper,
Could this be a result of the El Niño this year, one that is super?
I hope we can have some calm sunny days ahead of us,
And no more crazy weather…wouldn’t that be a plus!

The river’s stage doesn’t seem affected by it all,
The velocity barely budged- just over a crawl.
Turbidities didn’t much rise, which to me is a surprise,
Only 1 exceedance of E. coli--that site seems to always take the prize!

This weekend should be decent, the temps are still on their way up,
Maybe head to a creek and go swimming with your pup!
No major algae issues to be reported, the water quality is looking rather swell,
So enjoy this weekend- and happy Juneteenth to you as well!

Many of ORSANCO staff and commissioners spent this week in the “castles” of French Lick,
At least that’s what it felt like, in the grandeur of luxury (which was totally its shtick!)
If you don’t know, it’s a historic hotel and resort in Indiana’s southern part,
With an impressive dome constructed in 1901, whoever built that was kinda smart!

Here, we gathered for our Technical Committee as we do thrice a year,
We discuss ORSANCO’s programs, projects and future, and everyone gives us a cheer!
For all the hard work our staff puts in everyday and the energy we have to muster,
Especially these fantastic well-rounded poems, talk about a weekly brain buster! (I also do voice-over videos now)

But the water quality of the river is doing rather well,
I mean look at these numbers! She’s looking like a bombshell!
No E. Coli exceedances at any sites, now that is my jam,
Calm waters, low turbs, now’s the time to post some pics on the gram!

Temperatures are increasing, which makes you want to swim,
But with those increases, it could mean algal growth is on the brim,
We saw some diatom species populating in the upper parts of the Ohio- not a real threat,
And seeing these species is typical this time of year, so no need to fret!

But keep your eyes out for us if you see the river is turning kind of green,
All of you can be citizen scientists- helping us to keep it pristine!
This year is a Super El Nino- so weather patterns will mimic some previous blooms,
But that’s why the ORSANCO Avengers are here- to inform you of what looms!

Boy, things sure can change within a week,
Last week you would not have found me in a creek.
But today, things have tampered down quite a bit,
Boats are out, maybe go water skiing if you’re fit!

Waters were muddy earlier this week that I saw,
No way you’d even see an eagle with a fish in its maw!
But today, the turbs are looking lower than what I would have expected,
Which is great for all the recreaters who were starting to feel dejected!

But June is here! And the weather has matched,
Low rain, high temps- May was so detached!
Flows and velocity have followed suit,
By slowing wayyy down, like moving to the sound of a lute.

Bacteria levels have also calmed down,
Not like last week- boy, was that water brown!
Just two exceedances, but be careful in Huntington- holy moly that one’s high!
But enjoy the sunshine, and the rest of the river- relish in the low E. coli!

Oh May, what a month it’s been!
It went by so fast it’ll make your head spin.
From weddings, to trips, and roasting mallows by the fire,
From droughts, to floods, from freezing temps to 90’s- lady nature will conspire!

The last week has dumped almost four inches of rain!
I swear, soggy footwear is my existence’s bane.
But finally, the sun has come out and has showered us with its rays,
And NOAA’s forecast says we actually have normal precipitation for the next 14 days!

But all that rain has brought on a bout of high E. coli levels,
Every single sample we took exceeds our standards- oh the bacteria revels!
High rains just flush everything out and those microbes love to rally,
As our own Stacey Cochran said to me, “You can tell it rained in the Ohio Valley!”

Which- stages, flow, and velocity also tell the same tale,
Some areas have almost tripled in speed- might as well set sail!
But I would be careful to recreate on the river this weekend,
Just give it another week, while the water conditions are on the up and have time to mend!

This weekend is the unofficial start of summer,
We like to kick it off with a bang.
Maybe with a trumpet player and a drummer,
To play the Banner of Star and Spang!

Maybe you partake in a festive parade,
Or find a local swim spot if you risk.
But be wary if in the lake you wade,
The cold water might still be a bit brisk!

Go on and bust out the ol' BBQ!
And throw some dogs on the grill.
Unfortunately, the sun probably won't make it through,
And BBQ'ing in the rain might just give you a chill!

Rain keeps coming and coming,
And stages are expected to reach the skies.
I hope you've got good plumbing,
so the sewers don't back up- E. Coli is on the rise! (in some areas)

Will this rain ever cease?
One can only hope,
Flow and Velocity over the next few days will increase,
Maybe we need to call in a favor from the pope?

☔ It's been a rainy week across the Ohio River Basin — and that matters if you're planning to get on the river this Memorial Day weekend.

Rain flushes bacteria into the Ohio River from overland runoff and combined sewer systems, and levels can spike quickly — sometimes within hours of a storm or rain event. That's exactly why ORSANCO monitors E. coli weekly all season long.

Our latest weekly water quality report is out now. Have a safe and happy Memorial Day weekend out there!

Congrats to our friends at Ohio River Way! This morning, paddlers and community leaders gathered at Covington Landing for a ribbon-cutting ceremony officially designating this stretch of the Ohio River as the nation's newest National Water Trail!

The celebration is part of the 6th Annual Ohio River Way Challenge, a 23-day, 488-mile volunteer paddle from Huntington, WV to Evansville, IN — and the first thru-paddle of the Ohio River Way since its National Water Trail designation. Crews are covering up to 35 miles a day in three voyageur canoes, bringing well-deserved attention to this incredible river corridor.

Best of luck to the Challenge paddlers as they continue downstream, and a huge thank you to the Ohio River Way team for your tireless work to connect people to the river, inspire stewardship, and strengthen the communities along its banks.
