Distracted driving has become a major issue on our roadways. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 315,157 people were injured in 2024 due to distracted driving.

The Lutzie 43 Foundation, founded by Mike Lutzenkirchen, encourages every driver to take 43 Key Seconds to set yourself up for a safe trip — for you and for everyone else on the road.

Mike lost his son, Philip, who played tight end at Auburn University, in a motor vehicle accident in 2014. Mike's mission is to raise awareness of and put an end to distracted, impaired, and unsafe driving.

Remember, if you take your eyes off the road for more than two seconds, your crash risk increases.

Let's all do our part to make our roadways safer and take this issue seriously.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Chilton County Sheriff’s Office Investigates Threat at Verbena High School

Chilton County, Alabama — August 17, 2026 — On August 14, 2026, the Chilton County Sheriff’s Office was made aware of a threat directed at Verbena High School. Information gathered during the initial investigation led investigators to a student who had allegedly made concerning statements indicating possible violence toward students and faculty at the school.

Investigators responded promptly and immediately began an investigation. The student was removed from Verbena High School and excluded from campus pending the outcome of the criminal investigation.

On August 17, 2026, the student was taken into custody and charged with violating Alabama Code § 13A-10-241, Making a Terroristic Threat in the First Degree.

Due to the student’s age, the identity of the juvenile will not be released.

Chilton County Sheriff John Shearon emphasized the importance of communication and cooperation between school personnel and law enforcement:

“Building strong relationships between our school employees and School Resource Officers is one of the most important tools we have in keeping our communities safe. When teachers, administrators, staff, and SROs communicate and trust one another, information gets shared quickly, concerns are identified early, and investigations can move forward more effectively. That partnership doesn’t just help protect our schools—it can provide valuable information that helps law enforcement solve crimes and hold offenders accountable.”

The Chilton County Sheriff’s Office encourages students, parents, faculty, and community members to report any information regarding potential threats or concerning behavior to school officials or law enforcement. Early reporting and strong partnerships between schools and law enforcement are critical to maintaining a safe learning environment.
