❗️New Hire Announcement❗️

The Chilton County Sheriffs Office would like to welcome Keith Avery to our law enforcement family!

Deputy Avery was hired part-time in December 2025 and brings several years of law enforcement experience along with him. Fortunately, Deputy Avery accepted a full-time position beginning August 2026. He is assigned to the Patrol Division.

Deputy Avery is originally from Jemison, where he still resides. He enjoys helping the citizens of Chilton County.

Also, Deputy Avery states that he is inspired by his Shift Lieutenant, Jamie Johnson.

During his off time, he enjoys hunting and being outdoors.

Officer-Involved Shooting on I-65

Chilton County, Alabama — The Chilton County Sheriff’s Office and the Clanton Police Department were involved in an officer-involved shooting on Interstate 65.

No deputies or police officers were injured during the incident.

The Chilton County Sheriff’s Office has requested the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) to conduct an independent investigation into the incident.

At this time, no additional information will be released as the investigation is ongoing. Additional information will be provided when it becomes available and when it can be appropriately released.

The Chilton County Sheriff’s Office and Clanton Police Department appreciate the public’s patience and understanding as this investigation continues.

TRAFFIC ADVISORY – TRAIN DERAILMENT CLEANUP

The train derailment cleanup process is still ongoing. At this time, we do not have a timeline for when the cleanup will be completed.

Traffic will be rerouted at Highway 191/Highway 22:

Cars and small trucks will be allowed to continue on Highway 22 toward Mulberry Street.

Commercial vehicles will be rerouted north on Highway 191 to County Road 36, then to Highway 139.

Please avoid this area if possible. Cleanup operations are still underway, and traffic conditions may change as the work continues.

We will provide additional updates as information becomes available.

Please use caution and allow extra time for travel.

ROAD CLOSURE – HIGHWAY 22, MAPLESVILLE

Highway 22 in Maplesville will be closed for an undetermined amount of time due to the ongoing incident.

Please avoid the area if possible and use an alternate route. We will provide an update as soon as the roadway is reopened.

The Chilton County Sheriff’s Office is currently assisting with an active train derailment on Highway 22 in the Maplesville area.

At approximately 9:56 AM on October 1, 2026, Chilton County 911 began receiving multiple calls regarding the incident. Deputies responded to assist with the scene and traffic control.

Several boxcars have left the railroad tracks. At this time, there are no reported injuries, and officials have confirmed that no hazardous materials are leaking from the train. There is currently no indication of a danger to the surrounding community.

We are asking everyone to avoid the area until further notice. Please allow emergency responders, railroad personnel, and law enforcement officers the room needed to safely work the incident.

Parents and guardians: If you have a child who attends Maplesville High School and rides a school bus, please be aware that there may be delays in getting students home this afternoon because of the incident and resulting traffic restrictions.

We will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as additional information becomes available.

Meet Kathy Garris, who serves as Assistant Warden for the Chilton County Sheriff's Office. Originally from Jemison, Ala., Kathy says her favorite thing about working for the CCSO is the family atmosphere.

Outside of the office, she loves to read, travel, and spend time with her family.

Outside, you will see a Fallen Officer Memorial, which pays tribute to several officers who dedicated their lives for the citizens of Chilton County. The memorial serves as a daily reminder of their sacrifice, and we are proud to honor them and their families. 🇺🇸
