The state wide burning ban is still active! No open burning is permitted!

🚒Very High Fire Danger returns to the state for the remainder of the week into the weekend! Our moisture from Sunday is starting to dry up, and looking at the data, the forecast supports high fire to very high fire danger ‼️ over the next week.

Why is the fire danger high!!
Critically Dry Fuels: Following one of the driest Marches on record, soil moisture and stream levels are at very low. This means grass, brush, and trees are extremely dry and ready to ignite. Weather conditions are also exacerbating the situation; low humidity levels and gusty winds over the next few days will keep fire levels high.

-An open burn ban remains in effect for all 100 counties until further notice. Please DO NOT BURN.

As of April 6, 2026, the state-issued ban on open burning remains in effect for all 100 counties. The ban was enacted Saturday, March 28 due to hazardous forest fire conditions.

The ban prohibits outdoor burning of any kind, anywhere in the state, until further notice.

Due to increased wildfire risk, the N.C. Forest Service has issued a ban on all open burning and has canceled all burning permits statewide effective 6 p.m. Saturday, March 28 until further notice.

Under North Carolina law, the ban prohibits all open burning in the affected counties, regardless of whether a permit was previously issued. The issuance of any new permits has also been suspended until the ban is lifted. Anyone violating the burn ban faces a $100 fine plus $183 court costs. Any person responsible for setting a fire may be liable for any expenses related to extinguishing the fire.

The burn ban does not apply to fires started within 100 feet of an occupied dwelling. The local fire marshal has authority to issue a burn ban within those 100 feet.

Preventing wildfires involves managing ignition sources and reducing fuel around homes. Key actions include extinguishing campfires completely (drown, stir, feel), avoiding parking on dry grass, obeying burn bans, and creating a 30-foot "defensible space" by removing dead vegetation. Always check local fire restrictions and weather conditions, especially during hot, dry, and windy periods.

Key Prevention Measures:

Campfire Safety: Use designated rings, keep fires small, and soak with water, stir, and soak again until cool to the touch.

Vehicle & Equipment Safety: Avoid driving/parking on dry grass, ensure chains do not drag, and use spark arrestors on off-road vehicles and chain saws.

Debris Burning: Never burn on windy, dry days; always monitor fires and check local regulations first.

Defensible Space: Clear flammable material (leaves, firewood) within 30-100 feet of homes, and clean roof gutters regularly.

General Vigilance: Properly discard ci******es and report unattended fires immediately
