The list of 2025's most challenged books was released this morning as part of ALA's State of America's Libraries Report.

ALA documented 487 attempts to censor books at libraries, schools, and universities in 2025. The reasons most commonly cited for censorship were: false claims of illegal obscenity for minors; inclusion of LGBTQIA+ representation; covering topics of race, racism, social justice, and diversity; and presenting political or religious views with which the challengers disagreed.

Of the 4,235 unique titles that were challenged or banned in 2025, these are the top 11 most frequently targeted for censorship:

1) "Sold" by Patricia McCormick
2) "The Perks of Being a Wallflower" by Stephen Chbosky
3) "Gender Q***r: A Memoir" by Maia Kobabe
4) "Empire of Storms" by Sarah J. Maas
5) "Last Night at the Telegraph Club" by Malinda Lo (tie)
5) "Tricks" by Ellen Hopkins (tie)
7) "A Court of Thorns and Roses" by Sarah J. Maas
8) "A Clockwork Orange" by Anthony Burgess (tie)
8) "Identical" by Ellen Hopkins (tie)
8) "Looking for Alaska" by John Green (tie)
8) "Storm and Fury" by Jennifer L. Armentrout (tie)

Today is National Library Outreach Day, a day we celebrate libraries and library workers bringing the library to the people!

From bookmobiles and pop-ups to home delivery and library services for the incarcerated, library outreach meets communities where they are and ensures access to knowledge, connection, and care—no matter the barriers.

Connect with your library today and everyday, wherever you find it in your community!

National Library Outreach Day is coordinated in collaboration with the Association of Bookmobile and Outreach Services and the Association of Rural and Small Libraries.

It's National Library Week!

Millions of people visit their libraries every week—and for good reason. During National Library Week, April 19–25, take time to discover what brings you joy at your library. Visit your library and bring friends and family along; encourage a friend to get a library card and discover the opportunities it unlocks; browse the shelves, join a book club, attend a program or storytime, or get started on your next creative project in a makerspace.

National Library Week is filled with opportunities to celebrate our libraries and take action to keep them strong. Join in on one (or all!) of the various commemoration days:

Monday, 4/20: Right to Read Day - we're calling on library lovers and advocates to celebrate wins against censorship efforts and to take action to defend the freedom to read. On Right to Read Day, ALA will release the State of America's Libraries Report, including the list of the Top 10 Most Challenged Books of 2025.

Tuesday, 4/21: National Library Workers Day - take time to honor and thank the library workers at your library for all they do to impact your community.

Wednesday, 4/22: National Library Outreach Day - a day to celebrate libraries meeting people where they are. Look for your library out in your community - in the bookmobile, at a local pop-up, at schools or assisted living facilities, or wherever!

Thursday, 4/23: Take Action For Libraries Day - this year, we're asking YOU to show up for our libraries and take action against legislative censorship attempts by contacting Congress.

Stay tuned for posts throughout the week and more ways to get involved, and be sure to visit your library and ilovelibraries.org and celebrate your library.
