AHWF needs your help 'rebranding' in 2026

A tidy yard is often a deadly one.
Winter pushes small creatures to the edge of survival, and leaf litter becomes the only insulation they have left.

• Fireflies begin life in the soil and leaf layers — removing them erases next summer’s glow.
• Moths, butterflies, and beneficial beetles overwinter in folded leaves.
• Birds rely on these insects for scarce winter protein.

Leaf litter isn’t clutter.
It’s habitat.
It’s shelter.
It’s life.

If you want a thriving spring, protect the hidden world beneath your feet this winter.
A small act of patience creates an entire generation of wildlife.

A hollow tree isn’t empty — it’s full of life fighting to survive winter.

Raccoons rely on dry inner chambers to conserve heat.
Flying squirrels stash nuts in hidden cavities.
Owls perch inside sheltered hollows to escape storms.
Beetles, moths, spiders, and countless invertebrates overwinter in its protected layers.

When we cut down every dead or hollow tree “for safety,”
we erase one of the most critical winter habitats left in our landscapes.

If a hollow trunk isn’t threatening your home,
leave it standing.
For wildlife, it’s the difference between shelter and starvation.

Nothing to Shellibrate & utterly Ironic!

The dark cold days of winter have gone. The sun is bright and days long. We humans begin to think about summer activities including independence day celebrations. Please do NOT allow children to pick up frogs and turtles for "4th July races". The animal does not enjoy being kidnapped and is terrified of the proximity to humans, the noise, and the heat is very harmful to these cold blooded amphibians and reptiles.
Every species of native turtle is in peril. Every species within a habitat is vital. Do not confuse abuse for family fun entertainment. Empathy IS a display of national pride.
BAN TURTLE & FROG RACES
It is an unfortunate fact that turtles and frogs are accidentally and carelessly dropped or stepped on. Oher animals are simply abandoned or escape their captivity and find themselves in an unfamiliar surrounding ultimately dying. Frogs (amphibians) and turtles (reptiles) both require large quiet waterway habitats NOT direct sunlight with loud jeering crowds. Being held upside-down or at unnatural positions causes extreme distress. Being dropped can cause internal bleeding. Being fed improper man-made foods causes fatal digestive imbalances. Allowing children to handle any wild animal is not recommended. Children do not comprehend the importance of handwashing - zoonotic diseases are not rare.

FIREWORKS ARE THE WORST
Find humane ways to celebrate the freedoms hard earned by our nations soldiers! Is the BOOM such a big deal? Fireworks are not friendly for humans or animals. The soldiers we ae honoring and thanking are the ones being harmed.
Many find the noise displays trigger extreme anxiety or are even fatal. Demand quiet colors not PTSD triggering noise pollution. Why are we perpetuating the practice of loud unpredictable explosions quite often using child labor to produce and expelling carcinogenic and endocrine disrupting chemicals? Additionaly problematic are the partialy burned paper scraps 🔥

Idaho Fish and Game rejecs permits for professional wildlife rehabilitators. The wild spaces of Idaho will find fewer wild species. 90% of all patients accepted for care are due to human causes such as domestic cats, unintentional kidnapping, improper timing of tree trimming, and accidentally creating orphans by killing the mother to name a few. IDFG joins other states including Alabama who ignore the value and importance of the dedicated experienced trained people who are committed to providing the best care and returning the wild animal to the wild habitat.
