Meet Chris Gander — NRCCS’s new Board President! Chris is part of a 7th‑generation Steamboat/North Routt family and has been part of our school’s story since the beginning. Recently retired from a career as a digital strategist, developer, and business owner, he’s a patient communicator and an adaptive educator who looks forward to collaborating with kids, adults, and families. He will bring heart, a helping hand and local heritage to NRCCS. Welcome, Chris! 👏🌲❤️

North Routt Community Charter School middle-school English Language Arts and science teacher Melanie Walker has been chosen as one of 21 semifinalists for the 2027 Colorado Teacher of the Year award, according to a Wednesday...

🎉 Big news! This afternoon Colorado Commissioner of Education Susana Córdova announced 21 semi-finalists for the 2027 Colorado Teacher of the Year — and Melanie Walker is one of them! Melanie is the only semi-finalist from the Steamboat Springs School District and a shining example of North Routt Community Charter School’s values.

Out of 1,677 nominees and applicants from 106 school districts, the selection rate to semi-finalist was just 1.2% — a testament to how competitive this honor is. Applicants submitted videos, short-answer responses, and supervisor recommendations. Finalists will be chosen in September and the Teacher of the Year will be announced in October. All state Teachers of the Year will be honored in Washington, DC.

Please join NRCCS in congratulating Ms. Melanie for her outstanding dedication and for inspiring our middle school students to become lifelong learners.

How do we mark the transition from one chapter to the next? For NRCCS, it’s through meaningful, experiential learning. Our 8th-grade students recently completed their annual multi-night raft trip, exploring the Gates of Ladore Canyon— a culminating event that celebrates years of outdoor education and personal growth. This kind of immersive experience fosters grit, teamwork, and leadership skills that serve students long after graduation.
