🚨 SPECIAL CLARK TOWNSHIP COUNCIL MEETING – THURSDAY, JUNE 25 AT 7:30 PM 🚨

Residents should be aware that the Clark Township Council has scheduled a Special Meeting for Thursday, June 25 at 7:30 PM at Town Hall, 315 Westfield Avenue. Formal action may be taken.

Among the items on the agenda:

🔹 Public Hearing and Final Vote on a $2.675 Million Bond Ordinance for various public improvements, replacement equipment, machinery, and communications/signal systems.

🔹 Grant Applications for the Fire Department

Funding request to replace the Fire Department's radio system.
Funding request to replace an aging rescue pumper.

🔹 Adoption of the Union County Multi-Jurisdictional Hazard Mitigation Plan.

🔹 Shared Services Agreement with Westfield for use of the Westfield Conservation Center.

🔹 Historic Robinson Plantation House Roof Restoration Project, including contractor prequalification and bid authorization.

Residents will have opportunities to comment on agenda items and address the Council during public comment periods. If these issues matter to you, consider attending and making your voice heard.

Data center growth is an issue that should matter to everyone in Clark whether they are Republicans, Democrats, or Independents.
As data center development expands across New Jersey, Clark should be taking a proactive approach to protect residents and our community. Instead, our council has refused to address the potential impacts before they become problems.

We need leaders with enough technical knowledge to make sure there aren't loopholes that allow large projects to avoid the rules and oversight that residents expect.

We need EFFECTIVE, common sense rules that protect Clark and give our community a voice in decisions that affect our future.

Respect Should Be the Standard at Council Meetings

One thing that has stood out to me while watching many Township Council meetings is how differently people are treated depending on who they are.

I fully support freedom of speech. Residents have every right to express their opinions, ask questions, challenge elected officials, and disagree with one another. Public meetings should be a place where ideas are debated openly.

When it comes to candidates for office, political organizations, or public figures, criticism is part of the process. If you choose to run for office, you should expect your positions and actions to be scrutinized. That comes with the territory.

What concerns me is when individuals use public meetings to attack Clark residents who are not running for office, are not public officials, and in some cases may not have even attended the meeting. Simply having a different opinion should not make someone a target.

Even more concerning is the silence that often follows.

When ordinary residents are personally attacked, there is often no reminder about respect, civility, or decorum.

To me, leadership means applying the same standard to everyone.

Being respectful does not mean everyone has to agree. In fact, disagreement is healthy and necessary in a democracy. But there is a difference between debating ideas and attacking people.

If I am elected to Council, I will advocate for a standard of respect that applies equally to everyone who participates in our community. Whether someone agrees with me, disagrees with me, supports my campaign, opposes my campaign, or has no involvement in politics at all, they deserve to be treated with dignity.

The Mayor and Council have a responsibility to set the tone for public meetings. When personal attacks occur, they should remind everyone that disagreements are welcome, but disrespect is not.

Clark is strongest when residents feel comfortable participating in public discussions without fear of being mocked, targeted, or attacked for their views.

We do not need less debate. We need more respect.

The civil rights lawsuit against Clark was not thrown out and will be proceeding. In addition to Clark Township our current police director Pat Grady is a defendant in the suit as well as former mayor Sal Bonaccorso and former police chief Pedro Matos.

The Attorney's General Office sued in December, amid a years-long racism scandal.

This Memorial Day, we pause to honor and remember the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country. Their courage, dedication, and selflessness will never be forgotten.

As we gather with family, friends, and neighbors, let us reflect on the true meaning of this day and express our gratitude to all who have served and continue to serve.

10 years ago Clark held a candidates night for residents to learn about the ideas of those running for office. That is a distant memory that the current leadership seems committed to never repeat. This makes residents less informed about local issues and the choices they have.
