In the fall of 2015, through the efforts of Diane and Dave Shaggot, Pickleball instruction began at the Aquatic Center in Clarkesville, Georgia. With additional instruction and consultation from Laurie Lee (Pickleball Ambassador in White County), classes began. With the help and cooperation of Kurt Cooper, Director of Habersham County Recreation, nets, balls, and beginner paddles had been obtained.
Three indoor courts had been lined off and blocks of time set aside for Pickleball play. From that day it was apparent that this sport (new to most of us), was much fun, good exercise, challenging, a great social venue and addictive. Our numbers began to grow and, as new skills were learned, we became even more involved. We have produced winning teams in women's doubles, men's doubles and mixed doubles. We now have 6 indoor courts and 6 permanent outdoor courts with lights! Our hours listed are for open play for all levels. Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings are indoor and outdoor play for all to enjoy. We also have night time play on the outdoor courts under lights on Tuesday, Thursday and Sundays. In addition to open play hours, the outdoor courts are available for pick up games at your leisure. We welcome players of all skill levels from neighboring counties as well as people passing through from out of town to join us for open play. We have the two gyms set up with 3 courts on each side to accommodate social players as well as advanced/competitive players to ensure fun for all skill levels. Christine Tekippe, Certified IPTPA Instructor, serves as our liaison officer. You will find her welcoming beginners, instructing players, running clinics, and organizing pickleball social events to generally forward the growth of Pickleball in Habersham County. Peggy Fortson is our official Ambassador. Peggy is the reason Clarkesville and other surrounding cities within Habersham county will soon have outdoor pickleball courts. Peggy is a huge advocate for Pickleball. She spearheads community involvement in pickleball, works with city and county officials and keeps the pickleball bouncing all while managing all things related to being an official nonprofit pickleball club. We look forward to welcoming all players from near and far to come play with us and check out our beautiful new outdoor courts.
