A STRONG THUNDERSTORM WILL IMPACT FRANKLIN...STEPHENS... HABERSHAM...RABUN AND SOUTHWESTERN OCONEE COUNTIES THROUGH 715 PM EDT
Special Weather Statement issued May 22 at 6:31PM EDT by NWS Greenville-Spartanburg SC
At 631 PM EDT, Doppler radar was tracking a strong thunderstorm near
Clayton, or over Tiger, moving north at 35 mph.

HAZARD...Wind gusts up to 40 mph and half inch hail.

SOURCE...Radar indicated.

IMPACT...Gusty winds could knock down tree limbs and blow around
unsecured objects. Minor hail damage to outdoor objects is
possible.

Locations impacted include...
Toccoa, Clayton, Clarkesville, Carnesville, Cornelia, Baldwin,
Demorest, Mount Airy, Alto, and Franklin Springs.
If outdoors, consider seeking shelter inside a building.

Frequent cloud to ground lightning is occurring with this storm.
Lightning can strike 10 miles away from a thunderstorm. Seek a safe
shelter inside a building or vehicle.

For those planning to attend the Habersham Central High School graduation ceremony on Friday, May 22, 2026 — please check out this important information about traffic flow and parking after the ceremony.

Once graduation is over, all drivers will be required to obey officers’ directions, which will follow this announced traffic plan.

Orange arrow:
Vehicles leaving from the high school parking lot will be allowed to tum right out of the parking lot (heading toward Dicks Hill Parkway and Mt. Airy) or left out of the parking lot heading toward the 4-way stop at Camp Crock Parkway and Highway 197.

Once at the 4-way, vehicles will only be permitted to tum right onto Camp Creek Parkway (away from Cornelia).

Red arrow:
Vehicles leaving from behind the Ninth Grade
Academy will only be permitted to tum left onto Owens Circle heading toward Camp
Creek Road.

Once at the intersection of Camp Creek Road and Owens Circle, vehicles will only be permitted to turn right (heading toward Comelia).

Yellow arrow:
Vehicles leaving from the front of the Ninth
Grade Academy near Raider Stadium will only be permitted to turn left out of the Ninth Grade Academy onto Highway 197 (toward Clarkesville).

Current concerns include thunderstorms, localized flash flooding, lightning, and the potential for gusty to damaging winds Friday afternoon and evening. Rain chances are expected to continue through the holiday weekend.

⚠️⚠️ The Banks County Sheriff’s Office is currently on scene assisting emergency personnel with a trail derailment in the area of Yonah Homer Rd, N County Line Rd, and Old Cornelia Hwy. Barrett Rd and Moccasin Gap Rd will also see delays due to the length of the train. Motorists are encouraged to avoid the area and seek alternate routes while emergency responders assist and railroad officials conduct their investigations. ⚠️⚠️
