On May 2, 2026, at approximately 4:00 PM, officers with the Clarksdale Police Department responded to a call regarding a shoplifting complaint that later turned into an assault complaint.

Corporal Eric Hunter responded and made contact with the store employee who reported the incident. During the investigation, the employee became visibly upset and demanded that an arrest be made. Corporal Hunter attempted several times to explain the law and gather more information, but the employee continued to curse and be loud. After multiple warnings, she was placed under arrest for disorderly conduct. While being placed in hand restraints, she resisted before eventually being restrained.

Corporal Hunter then spoke with the other individual involved, who stated that she had been pushed while leaving the store and admitted to striking the employee several times.

Corporal Hunter’s city-issued body camera recorded the interaction. An internal review was completed, and it was determined that Corporal Hunter did not violate any use-of-force policy.

Officers are generally not allowed to make an arrest for a misdemeanor offense that they did not personally witness, except in certain cases such as domestic violence when evidence is present.

This incident is still currently going through the court process. Because of that, body camera footage cannot be released at this time. The Clarksdale Police Department will continue to remain transparent and take all complaints seriously.

The Clarksdale Police Department is continuing to investigate the shooting of 22-year-old Nataurean Lofton.

On April 24, 2026, at approximately 2200 hours, Mr. Lofton was shot several times while sitting inside a vehicle that was parked on the side of the road with his girlfriend and their two children inside. Despite the terrifying situation, his girlfriend was able to drive him to Northwest Mississippi Regional Medical Center, where he was later transported to Regional One Health for further treatment.

Mr. Lofton underwent multiple surgeries during his fight for survival. Tragically, on May 1, 2026, he succumbed to his injuries.

We extend our prayers and deepest condolences to the Lofton family, especially the children who now must grow up without their father. Violence of this nature has no place in our community.

If you have any information regarding this case, please contact Sergeant Morgan or Corporal Grimes at 662-621-8151. Even the smallest piece of information could help bring justice to this family.
