Coahoma County Higher Education Center The CCHEC continues to target high needs within the region. For more information, contact Jen Waller at 662-645-3555 or [email protected]

The Coahoma County Higher Education Center (CCHEC) is a higher education facility established in 1999 to serve the citizens of Coahoma County and people in the broader Mississipi Delta by increasing opportunity and enrichment through education. The Coahoma County Higher Education Center (CCHEC) is located north of downtown Clarksdale in the historic district on a geographical site known as Cutrer

Hill. In 1999, Delta State University (DSU), traditionally a teachers college, entered into a partnership with Coahoma Community College (CCC), an historically black community college, to create the Coahoma County Higher Education Center (CCHEC). The CCHEC was designed to strengthen the outreach capabilities of DSU and CCC, but the partnership changed when DSU dropped out of the project in March 2017 due to budget cuts. Over the years, these have included education and teacher preparation, healthcare support, business and career development, and hospitality skill improvement. The CCHEC also serves as the hub for the MS Delta Tennessee Williams Festival and is working to develop a writing skills support program for students at Coahoma Community College and other area youth.

A REFLECTION ON MY BUSY SEASON

I can’t believe we are 10 days away from the start of the 32nd Annual MS Delta Tennessee Williams Festival.
There is always so much to do and last year, I almost had a nervous breakdown.

The stress and trauma of deadlines and expectations and unkind, unsupportive people just really knocked the wind out of my sail.

You know, it seems that the naysayers and knit pickers always seem to have the loudest, cruelest, longest-lasting voice.

But the great thing is that when I got back up, rested a little and processed the whole situation and year, I made a decision.

I will do my best to never allow myself to feel that kind of stress and trauma again. I will deal with it differently or remove it from my life.

God says that we should put on the full armour of God as we go out into the world each day, and I try to do that.

I rest and think and pray. A lot.

I also believe that if God is with me, then who can be against me.

God has a plan for my life. He has planted a vision in my heart and mind for a future, and I work toward that every day.

He has placed me in every situation I have ever found myself to be in. He holds me in the palm of his hand. His fingerprints are all over me so I am protected, and I know that I am special because he loves me and provides for me every single day.

What a Mighty God I serve ❤️

Maybe someone who reads this needs to hear this or maybe I just needed to share it…

To make it clear in my own mind who I am, what I am, and why I am the person I have become today.

There is purpose in my life. There is direction in my life.
And there is lots and lots of love and peace in my life.

It was a lovely weekend with family and friends. Now onward and upward we go through this wonderful life we have been given.

Thank you Lord. I am so incredibly blessed 🙌💗🌟🎉

LEARNING TOGETHER

Last week, our Writers for Life club from Coahoma Community College began our study on the life and legacy of Emmett Till.

I started the initial conversation by reading an excerpt from the PBS book Eyes on the Prize published in 1987 which opened my own eyes to the importance of the civil rights movement so many years ago. But while reading it, we realized that over time, the stories had evolved and changed as more research was done.

Then on Wednesday of last week, we took a field trip along the Emmett Till trail in Leflore and Tallahatchie counties that included the site of Bryant’s Store, the Gin museum in Glendora, and the historic courthouse in Sumner.

Now today, we look forward to going to Oxford, to walk on the grounds of Rowan Oak, stop by the statue of James Meredith on the Ole Miss campus, break bread together at Newks cafe, and attend Wright Thompson’s book launch of The Barn at Square Books.

We are learning and living and healing together one step at a time 🙌❤️

We were thrilled to have Ms.
Sherry Henderson of Denver Colorado with us yesterday at the Coahoma County Higher Education Center speaking to CCC’s Writers for Life literary club. The students and teachers loved hearing about Sherry’s writing process to publish her 2023 memoir, Black Magnolia: An Unequivocal Southern Belle.

We look forward to hosting Sherry again tonight at the Cutrer Mansion for another Cutrer Book talk where she will share her personal story from “striving to thriving” in life.

Doors open at 5 pm. Talk begins at 5:30 pm with a book signing to follow. For more information, contact Jen Waller at 662-645-3555 or [email protected]. We hope to see you there!! 🤗💕
