Asotin Family Escapes Early Morning House Fire

Lewis Clark Valley firefighters and EMS crews were kept busy early Monday morning after responding to two separate fires in Asotin and Lewiston.

Just after midnight, firefighters were dispatched to a house fire in the 800 block of First Street in Asotin. When the first crews arrived, they found heavy smoke and fire coming from the garage of the home.

Neighbors helped alert the sleeping family, allowing everyone to safely escape the home before firefighters arrived.

Through an automatic aid agreement, crews from the Asotin County Fire District #1, Clarkston Fire Department, Lewiston Fire Department, and Wheatland Fire District assisted the Asotin Fire Department at the scene.

Firefighters were able to contain the fire to the garage, which sustained heavy damage. No injuries were reported. Investigators believe the fire may have started from a heat lamp used in a chicken coop near the back of the garage.

Then, at approximately 3:15 a.m., many of the same crews responded to another fire in the 200 block of 14th Avenue in Lewiston.

Firefighters arrived to find a shop fully involved, with flames spreading to nearby vehicles and brush. Downed power lines created additional hazards for crews until utility workers from Avista arrived on scene.

No injuries were reported in the Lewiston fire. The cause remains under investigation.

Grass Fire Quickly Contained in Asotin County

Clarkston, Wash. — Firefighters with Asotin County Fire District #1 responded to a small grass fire in the 1100 block of 16th Avenue just before noon Friday.

Initial reports indicated the fire was threatening nearby storage units and a power pole. Upon arrival, crews found an approximately 100-foot fire line burning downhill from the roadside in tall mixed grass. Fire officials said the blaze was slow moving.

Fire Chief Noel Hardin said the incident serves as an early reminder of the fire danger facing the region this season.

“This is just the beginning of a potential long season,” Hardin said. “Fuels are drying quickly and it won’t take long for conditions to reach extreme levels.”

Firefighters quickly contained the fire and remained on scene for about 30 minutes extinguishing hot spots.

The cause of the fire was undetermined. No injuries were reported.

Asotin County Fire District #1 Gears Up for Busy Summer Fire and Water Rescue Season!

Asotin County Fire District #1 crews are preparing for what could be a demanding summer season, with firefighters and EMS personnel conducting specialized training exercises Thursday both on land and in the water.

Firefighters spent Thursday sharpening wildland firefighting skills, while EMS crews trained at the Asotin County Aquatic Center focusing on water rescue operations and emergency response techniques.

Chief Noel Hardin said long-range forecasts are predicting drier-than-normal conditions across the region, increasing the risk for wildland fires in the coming months.

“We’re already seeing grasses and vegetation begin to dry rapidly,” Hardin said. “Fuel loads are heavy this year, and once conditions fully dry out, the potential for fast-moving wildland fires will be extreme.”

District officials are encouraging residents to take preventative action now by mowing tall grass, clearing weeds and brush around homes, and creating defensible space before fire danger escalates.

The district’s professional volunteer firefighters and EMS personnel train weekly to remain ready for emergencies throughout the year. Training efforts over the next several months will focus heavily on wildland fire response and river rescue preparedness.

Summer Fire Safety Tips

• Clear dry grass and weeds at least 30 feet from homes and structures.

• Never leave campfires unattended and ensure they are completely extinguished.

• Avoid parking vehicles in tall dry grass.

• Use caution with outdoor equipment that may create sparks.

• Follow all local burn restrictions and fire weather warnings.

Residents with concerns or questions about fire danger in their neighborhoods are encouraged to contact Asotin County Fire District #1 for information and guidance.
