While it may seem pollinator-friendly, Butterfly Bush (Buddleja davidii) is a nonnative shrub that often escapes gardens, resulting in aggressive spreading in natural areas. Despite its name, Butterfly Bush does not support caterpillars, and instead outcompetes the native plants that butterflies depend on throughout their lifecycle. 🦋

Instead of Butterfly Bush, consider these truly pollinator-friendly natives:

✔️ New Jersey Tea (Ceanothus americanus): shrub loved by a variety of pollinators, including hummingbirds + fragrant, white spring blooms
✔️ Spicebush (Rhus aromatica): shrub with delicate yellow flowers and bright berries for birds + primary host plant for Spicebush Swallowtail Butterfly
✔️ Butterfly W**d (Asclepias tuberosa): essential host plant for Monarch Butterflies + herbaceous perennial with vibrant orange blooms

You can find New Jersey Tea and Spicebush, along with many other native alternatives, through our annual Spring Tree & Shrub Sale happening now! Visit https://oaklandcd.myshopify.com/collections/all to take a look at our selection.

💧Whether it’s the water we drink, the lakes we enjoy, or the wetlands that support native wildlife, it’s easy to understand why water is so important. This World Water Day, take a moment to be thankful for our water and the many ways it supports our communities, ecosystems, and ways of life.

Here’s a bonus fun fact! ➡️ Did you know that Oakland County has the most inland lake shoreline of any county in Michigan (over 1,300 miles)?

The figures in this post were obtained from EGLE, USGS, MSU, and Oakland County Michigan Government.

It’s time to burn the bridge with Burning Bush! 🔥

Despite its aggressive nature and lack of support for native wildlife, Burning Bush (Euonymus alatus) is still widely sold and planted – but beauty shouldn’t have to come at an ecological cost.

Instead of nonnative Burning Bush, consider choosing natives that give back:

✔️ Arrowwood Viburnum (Viburnum dentatum): beautiful white spring blooms + nutritious berries that support native wildlife
✔️ Fragrant Sumac (Rhus aromatica): tough + adaptable, with vibrant fall foliage
✔️ Silky Dogwood (Cornus amomum): food / shelter for pollinators & songbirds + soil-stabilizing roots

You can find Arrowwood Viburnum and Silky Dogwood, along with many other native alternatives, through our annual Spring Tree & Shrub Sale happening now! Visit https://oaklandcd.myshopify.com/collections/all to take a look at our selection.
