Some plantings we picked up at the Blue Heron Headwaters Conservancy Native Sale in our new native plant garden behind the entrance bench, Sand Coreopis, Butterfly W**d, and Purple Coneflower. Everything else seems to grow there so hopefully these will too!

Here comes the Green!

Our hilltop is pretty dry soil but with the wet spring here in Michigan we are seeing some of the best green up in our lawn areas in quite awhile. A little bit of onsite developed natural fertilizer but otherwise just the natural cycles of nature!

From a lightning strike to a beautiful table! Several years ago a large Black Oak suffered a lightning strike on the property that killed the tree. From that tree we recovered several slabs and are now making furniture from them. This is our first result. In addition to developing the Preserve, we are also Craftsmen and look forward to many new Projects. We really enjoy re-using what the property has provided in new ways! We also take on Projects for others as well. Contact us if you have an idea!

Fire? Always a concern but also part of our past. Interesting how long the evidence stays around

Planting some Spruce and Cedar

One of our goals has been to try and diversify the forest a bit. In support of that we have planted about 25 White Spruce today and also an Eastern Red Cedar. 4 inches tall today but maybe in the next generation something powerful!

Native Roots is growing.

This year’s Native Roots - Plant Sale & Community Market will once again bring together native plants, local makers, growers, artists, and small farms for a thoughtfully curated day centered around nature, community, and local connection.

Here’s a little sneak peek at just a few of the wonderful vendors joining us this May. From hand-dyed wearable art and woven willow craft to terrariums, honey, and maple syrup, each brings something unique to the market.
