Our little Island, Up until 1970 there were only 4 houses and 20 people in the entire red footprint that is today the Deerwoods. Today there are 430 houses and over 1600 people using that same land. Could have been worse without the protections our family chose to employ on the green box that is today the Prospect Hill Nature Preserve. It wasn't easy or always popular but we think it was worth it.

Do We Belong to the Land or Does the Land Belong to Us?
A great thought provoker from our guest Carol Egbo, Oakland County Park Historian at our Meet The Preserve Event this week. My answer is its a balance. In this day and age to Protect the land you have to control the Ownership to be its defender and ambassador but between you and it a partnership and a co-dependency can develop!

Oak Wilt Preventive Care.

As a bit of preventative care against Oak Wilt on the property, our property is engaged as part of a Research Project evaluating advanced control measures for Oak Wilt. We had a black oak tree snap off and come down in a storm recently. No evidence of Oak Wilt here but the exposed wound makes the trunk subject to airborne infection and then transmission to surrounding trees through root transmission. To help break the root link, we performed a cup cut and herbacide treatment. The theory is this will accelerate the dying of the roots and break the transmission path should this tree stump get infected at the wound. Very simple procedure and we'll continue to monitor. We've accepted that we really can't control branch wounds on a property this size so we are completely exposed to airborne infection. Best hope would be to contain an infection to a single tree and prevent runaway root spread. Is anybody managing an Oak Wilt outbreak on your Property? Would like to hear others experiences.

We're excited to introduce the Guest Speaker for our upcoming Event on the Preserve! Carol Egbo is the Historian for the Oakland County Parks and tells a great tale of the original pioneers that settled on the Property and surrounding development. We now know there were people standing at our gate as far back as 1817! Come join us to hear more, as well as how this property was protected from the surrounding development. Join Us Wednesday Oct 7, 5:00 pm. This Event is coordinated with our partner Blue Heron Headwaters Conservancy and is a great way to support both our organizations to be able to continue to Preserve, Conserve and Enjoy the beautiful lands of Oakland County!
