Fall is approaching! Always a big transition on the Preserve but weather makes an evening Bonfire a lot of fun. Love our refurbished Chairs, Back in service with new Powder Coat after 30 years of use! We work hard to refurbish as many items on the property as we can, natural and man made. Also a new roof on the shed, another bench and the Dinner Bell! All done by the craftsmen that support the Preserve. Do you have something cool you woudl like to see restored, we can help

Why do dead trees always fall across the hill?

I was asked this question by someone I encountered walking the trails today. I wish nature was that organized but it isn't. One of the things we have to try and manage with all our hills is erosion. Not a lot of undergrowth in many areas so we lay the tree's that have fallen across the hill after trimming off the branches. It is a simple solution and has been very effective. A secondary benefit, Those trees were absorbing nutrients out of that ground their entire life. As they decay, they return the nutrients to the same spot for the next generation of forest to utilize. Also supporting all manner of microbes and other small stuff critical to maintaining the health of the soil

A great example of how, sometimes, luck, fate and commitment merge to save a habitat

At the very tip of the Keweenaw, down a pothole dirt road south of Copper Harbor, stands a forest that should not exist. White pines twelve stories tall, one of them rooted since around 1695, alive since before Michigan was Michigan. Nearly every tree like them went to the sawmills a century ago. These survived because the land belonged to a family in Paris, France, through the whole logging era. When the saws finally came for them in 1970, the people of the Keweenaw refused to allow it. Did you know Oakland Township was once much larger than it is today?

In 1820, Oakland Township included the upper three-fifths of Oakland County. Even after its boundaries changed in 1827, it still included what are now Addison, Oxford, Orion, Oakland, and Avon townships. By 1837, the year Michigan became a state, Oakland Township had reached its present size.

A lot has changed in nearly 200 years! Check out this map from 1817 of Oakland Township. Thanks to the Oakland History Center in Pontiac for making these maps publicly available for research.
