Pillars of Hope is one of our public art initiatives that we are proudest of. It is truly public art in its best sense. More than 300 Clarksville citizens painted the tiles that show community support for the victims of 9/11.

In 2018, we thought we had gotten a late start and would have to race to get an artist selected, money raised, and the statue sculpted and cast in time to dedicate Tennessee Triumph on the 100th anniversary of Tennessee’s ratification of the 19th Amendment. But thanks to the hard work of women like Rosalind Culbertson Kurita, Martha Pile, Brenda Harper, Tennie was erected, and hundreds celebrated her unveiling with an old-fashioned suffrage parade.Arts and Heritage is proud to have spearheaded these efforts.

Tennessee Triumph represents Tennessee’s special role as the Perfect 36, the final state needed to ratify the Nineteenth Amendment, extending suffrage to women. The Amendment was certified 106 years ago from today.

Today, August 26, is Women’s Equality Day -- the anniversary date of the certification of the 19th Amendment.

In recognition of the occasion, we'd like to highlight 'Tennessee Triumph,' a 7-foot tall, bronze statue that represents all Clarksville women who worked for suffrage.

The statue was brought to its current home on Public Square on August 15, 2020 to commemorate 100 years of suffrage.
