Mid-Week Muse:

This bizarre and morbid mystery still hasn't been solved!

On June 24, 1374, there was a sudden outbreak of "Dance Mania" which caused several thousands of people in the streets of Aachen, Germany to experience hallucinations and begin to jump and twitch uncontrollably until they collapsed from exhaustion. The "Dancing Mania" was a strange social phenomenon that defies clear explanation to this day. It was recorded throughout the history of the Middle Ages, with the earliest accounts dating from the 7th century.

The symptoms varied, but there was one constant: those who were “infected” moved in groups, performing something similar to dancing as their bodies twitched with spasms, leaving anyone who saw it with a sense of dread. People who engaged in this activity didn’t seem to be aware of themselves, as if they were in some sort of trance. Sometimes the affliction would possess a person for days, weeks, and in some cases months. This was no laughing matter, as those stricken by this peculiar obsession would sometimes die of exhaustion or hunger.

Doctor Justus Friedrich Karl Hecker was an epidemiologist and native of Erfurt, Germany, where there had been a horrible outbreak of the "Dancing Mania" in 1237 that affected a group of children who later died from it. He wrote a book published in 1888, titled "The Black Death and the Dancing Mania" in which he collected numerous accounts of the phenomena, relating it socially to the horrific consequences of the bubonic plague that reached its peak in Europe in the mid-14th century.

The Woodward Library has a copy of Dr. Hecker's Book (re-released in 1970) "The Dancing Mania of the Middle Ages" if you're interested in learning more about this curious and hellish "sickness." It may be found in the library's General Book Collection: https://apsu.primo.exlibrisgroup.com/permalink/01APSU_INST/dju5e5/alma991000065629708071

Monday Motivation!

"Maybe I'm idealistic, maybe I'm naive, but I do believe all humans are inherently good and judgment free and that -- really -- everything is love... I think we as a society do want to grow to accept more authenticity and expression of identities, because isn't that what all of us want, anyway?"
― Stuart Getty, HOW TO THEY/THEM

If you want to read more, you may find this book in the Popular Books Collection on the main floor of the Woodward Library.

🥸 "We had a dad check out a book about anti-gravity from the library.
He couldn’t put it down." Did that "Dad joke" make you groan?

You know, fatherhood and libraries are the same: both require a lot of patience and returning things to where they belong. Okay, okay, we'll stop.

The Woodward Library wants to wish a Happy Father's Day to all the dads out there! May your jokes be cool, your grills be hot, your fishing be easy, and your recliners be soft! ❤🎩

Mid-Week Muse:

One hundred and forty one years ago, on this day (June 17, 1885) the Statue of Liberty finally arrived in New York Harbor aboard the French Navy frigate, `Isere. Many people don't even think about the sheer amount of effort, time and logistics it took to not only build this enduring monument, but to ship it all the way from France!

Did you know that it took the artist NINE YEARS to sculpt Lady Liberty? Did you know that there are 350 massive, copper pieces that make up her statue and that it took a 27-day trans-Atlantic voyage battling intense and severe storms just to get her to America's shore?

The Woodward Library has a wonderful book by Marvin Trachtenberg, called "The Statue of Liberty" which tells how the Statue of Liberty was planned, built, and transported to America, and how she became a national emblem of freedom and hope. It is full of interesting color and black and white photographs that capture the humanity present in what has become such a powerful symbol of freedom, democracy and international friendship.

You may find this book in the library's General Collection:

Two for Tuesday!

The Woodward Library has lots of good movies, too, and this week’s Two for Tuesday challenge is ready for kickoff!

🏈 "Friday Night Lights" is about the intensity of small-town Texas football, where dreams, pressure, and pride smash together under the stadium lights. It’s powerful, emotional, and impossible not to get swept up in the story.

🏈 "The Blind Side" tells the uplifting true story of Michael Oher’s journey from uncertainty to opportunity, showing how compassion and support can change a life forever.

Whether you love underdog stories, heartfelt drama, or the thrill of game night, these films deliver both action and heart. Both titles may be found in the Popular Video Collection on the main floor of the library.
