Wednesday Wildlife Trivia is one we have done before, but it is the season. These are too beautiful to not share every year. These are in bloom at Wolter's Prairie Preserve. Do you know what they are?

Nothing says summer like boating and fishing! Are we right?

Free Fishing Weekend in Iowa is the first full weekend of June each year (June 5-7), and that seems the perfect time to take a paddle down the Shell Rock River - fishing as we go. All are welcome to join in this paddle and fish event. It will be a leisurely float/paddle to allow those who want to fish from their kayaks/canoes the ability to do so.

Whether you are new to paddling and/or fishing or a seasoned "pro", you can get on the river with us for a fun and relaxing morning. Kayaks and fishing equipment are available for those who need to borrow, but you are also welcome to bring your own.

Registration is required by calling 319-346-6551, and space is limited. When you call, be sure to let us know the number in your party, your contact information, and if you will bring your own equipment or borrow ours.

Hopefully the river and weather will allow us to hold this event, but in the case of inclement weather or high water in the river, we will cancel.

🥁🥁Drumroll Please!!!
The playground at Shell Rock is complete and READY FOR PLAY as of May 7, 2026!!!
Take a look at what it looked like last summer after the storm and what it looks like today. It should be a nice weekend to go out and enjoy a little time on the new equipment, and feel free to let us know how much you like it 🙂

It is time for Wednesday Wildlife Trivia!
This week our photo was taken by Butler CCB staff member Jake at one of our wildlife area parking lots.
Do you know what these young birds are? Let us know what you think, and we will let you know the answer on Friday.

We apologize for the information you are about to read. It is a bummer to the Butler CCB staff when we have to stop our work to ask for the help of our adoring fans out there. Please do us a favor though, and keep any negative and nasty comments off of this post and page. This is not the place to call names or rant. Thank you.

Today's PSA: Over the past weeks, you may have noticed we have been hard at work replacing the damaged playground at Shell Rock Park, and we got a huge load of specialized playground mulch (it's not cheap stuff) delivered a littler earlier than we were ready to get it placed. While out working to place the border around the playground to be able to place the mulch under the equipment, our staff noticed that someone backed right up to our pile of mulch and stole some for their own use. We know how tempting that pile of mulch must look, but stealing is not the answer. For those that have been desiring our mulch pile but have not yet succumbed to urge to steal it, we appreciate you. And we appreciate if you continue to stifle that urge - allowing us to finish this project with no further incident. If you know who we might want to talk to about this, feel free to send us a private message, give us a call at 319-346-6551, or e-mail [email protected].

Today's Friendly Reminder: And while we are on the topic....we have had many signs left lying around our shelters and campsites the past few years and now being tacked to our newly painted shelters this year. Here is your friendly reminder that Permission Is Required to post/place signs or flyers of any kind in any of our parks and natural areas. You can send us a private message here, give us a call at 319-346-6551 or e-mail [email protected].

Thanks all. We hope you get out to enjoy the sunshine and nice weather today, and thanks for being adoring fans of the Butler CCB 🙂🌳🐢

This week for Wednesday Wildlife Trivia, we are going to ask you to find the object hiding in plain sight in this photo and try to identify it. It is not plant or fungus, bone or scat....can you find it and tell us what it is?
Best of luck.

Photo Description: Green leaves of plants and some purple bluebells about to bloom grow out of the forest leaf litter and branches on the ground - with an object hiding in plain sight.

We are still planning to host our Earth Week Wildflower walk on the north side of Heery Woods Park starting at 5:00 PM.
Come on out to the shelter just inside the entry, and wear shoes that can get a little muddy. We will be on mowed nature trails as well as the Rolling Prairie Bike trail for portions of the walk.
Hopefully the weather will cooperate, and we can find some great wildflowers in the woods - probably not the lily pictured though. That is a lily that can be found blooming at Wolter's Prairie among other places around the area.

Wednesday Wildlife Trivia - EARTH DAY EDITION!!
Happy Earth Day from the Butler County Conservation Board.
We know many of you are out searching the woods for mushrooms (of the morel variety) on these nice days, so we wanted to challenge you to see if you know any other mushrooms growing right now in the woodlands of our area. This was found by Annette while doing some trail clearing near the nature center this week. Do you know what it is?
Give us your best answer in the comments below, and we will let you know if you are right Friday morning.
