Earlier this month, several members of the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office were recognized during a formal promotion ceremony.

Please join us in congratulating each of them on this well-deserved accomplishment:

Stephanie Foster and Mike Jones were promoted to the rank of Sergeant. Sgt. Foster will continue serving in the Detention Services Bureau, while Sgt. Jones will serve in the School Resource Officer Division.

Daniel Black and Jonathan Inman were promoted to the rank of Lieutenant. Lt. Black will continue serving in the Detention Services Bureau, while Lt. Inman will serve in the Patrol Division.

Marc McElroy was promoted to the rank of Captain and will lead the Professional Standards Bureau.

These promotions reflect the dedication, experience, and commitment each of these individuals has demonstrated throughout their service to the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office.

Today, we said a fond farewell to Lt. James Derico as he retires after more than 31 years of dedicated public service.

Lt. Derico began his career with the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office in 1995 as a Sheriff’s Reserve Deputy before becoming a POST-certified Deputy in 1996. He spent much of his career serving in our Patrol Division and earned numerous training and instructor certifications throughout his career.

We will remember Lt. Derico for his dedication, professionalism, and commitment to serving the people of Montgomery County, as well as his fellow members of the Sheriff’s Office.

Lt. Derico, thank you for more than three decades of service and for all you have done for our community and our agency. We wish you all the best in your retirement!

Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office K9 Paco to get donation of body armor

Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, TN - K9 Paco will receive a bullet and stab protective vest thanks to a charitable donation from non-profit organization Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. K9 Paco’s vest was sponsored by Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. and will be embroidered with the sentiment “Honoring those who served and sacrificed”. Delivery is expected within ten weeks.

Vested Interest in K9s, Inc., established in 2009, is a 501(c)(3) charity whose mission is to provide bullet and stab protective vests and other assistance to dogs of law enforcement and related agencies throughout the United States. This potentially lifesaving body armor for four-legged K9 officers is U.S. made, custom fitted, and National Institute of Justice (NIJ) certified. Since its inception, Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. has provided over 6,631 vests valued at $6.9 million to K9s in all 50 states, made possible by both private and corporate donations.

The program is open to U.S. dogs at least 20 months old, actively employed, and certified with law enforcement or related agencies. K9s with expired vests are also eligible to participate. There are an estimated 30,000 law enforcement K9s throughout the United States.

Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. accepts tax-deductible contributions in any amount, while a single donation of $1,050 will sponsor one vest. Each vest has a value of $1800.00, weighs an average of 4-5 lbs., and comes with a five-year warranty. For more information, or to learn about volunteer opportunities, please call (508) 824-6978. Please join us in congratulating Class 3-2026, Deputies Janoy Heath, Zlexis Nefe, and Justin Wilens, on their successful graduation from the Cadet Training Program.

The Cadet Training Program equips new deputies with more than 470 hours of comprehensive training, including practical and administrative instruction such as fi****ms proficiency, defensive tactics, de-escalation techniques, and department policies and procedures. In addition, each deputy completes over 300 hours of supervised on-the-job training prior to being sworn in.

We commend these deputies for their dedication and hard work, and we wish them continued success as they begin their careers in public service. Congratulations to Class 3-2026 on this outstanding achievement.

It is with great pride that we recognize Brady Hass and Owen Ahearn for their actions in assisting others during critical situations.

On June 4, 2026, thirteen-year-olds Brady Hass and Owen Ahearn were walking to Sango Market when they encountered an elderly couple in distress. A woman had been injured in a fall and was calling for help, while a man was experiencing a seizure. They both immediately stopped to assist the couple and worked with E-911 dispatchers to provide assistance until emergency responders arrived.

The actions of both Brady and Owen demonstrate the importance of recognizing when someone needs help and taking action. Their willingness to assist others reflects positively on themselves, their families, and the Montgomery County community.

In recognition of their actions and service to the community, Brady Hass and Owen Ahearn were each awarded a Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office Certificate of Recognition and a Citizen Challenge Coin.

Tomorrow is the first day of school! That means we'll have new drivers on the road, parents taking their children to school for the first time, and students getting used to new schools and new routines.

Please give yourself a little extra time and drive with extra caution, especially during these first few days as everyone adjusts to new schedules and traffic patterns.

Please join us in congratulating several members of the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office Command Staff on their well-earned promotions.

During a recent promotion ceremony, Sheriff John Fuson recognized these leaders for their dedication, professionalism, and continued commitment to serving Montgomery County.

Jesse Reynolds has been promoted to Chief Deputy. With nearly 30 years of law enforcement experience, Chief Reynolds has served in a variety of assignments, including Patrol and the Drug Task Force, bringing extensive operational knowledge and leadership to his new role.

Billy Wall has been promoted to Assistant Chief Deputy over Enforcement. He also brings nearly 30 years of law enforcement experience, having served in multiple divisions, including Patrol and Criminal Investigations.

Jessica Oakes has been promoted to Assistant Chief Deputy of the Detention Services Bureau. With more than 15 years of experience within the bureau, she has developed extensive expertise in jail operations and leadership. Assistant Chief Deputy Oakes also becomes the agency's first female Assistant Chief Deputy, after previously becoming its first female Captain.

Timothy Adair has been promoted to Captain and will oversee Enforcement Operations for the Patrol and School Resource Officer Divisions. With more than 20 years of law enforcement experience, he has served in the Detention Services Bureau, Warrants Division, and Patrol.

Joseph Welch has been promoted to Captain of the Detention Services Bureau. With more than 20 years of service in the bureau, he has held numerous leadership positions and brings extensive experience in detention operations and jail management.

Congratulations to each of these leaders on this significant career achievement. We appreciate your dedication to the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office and your continued commitment to serving our community.
