🎒Help Your Child Do Well in School Build the Habit of Good Attendance

Did you Know?
Too many absences in preschool and elementary school can cause children to struggle socially and academically.
Being late to school may lead to poor attendance.
Missing 10% of school (2 days each month) can make it harder to learn to read and do basic math.

Attending school regularly helps children feel better about school — and themselves. Start building this habit in preschool and through elementary school so they learn right away that going to school on time, every day, is important.

What you can do.
Set a regular bedtime and morning routine.
Lay out clothes and pack backpacks the night before.
Keep your child healthy and make sure your child has the required shots.
Develop backup plans for getting to school if something comes up.
Monitor your child’s absences.
Try to schedule non urgent medical appointments and extended trips when school isn’t in session.

If your child seems anxious about going to school, talk to teachers, school counselors and other parents for advice on how to make your child feel comfortable and excited about learning.

If you are concerned that your child may have a contagious illness, call your school nurse or health-care provider for advice. Ask the teacher for ideas to support missed learning time.

❤️ Wednesday Wisdom for Families

Give It Time

The first days of school bring BIG feelings—for kids and grown-ups!

A new school year means new teachers, new routines, new expectations, new friendships, and a whole new rhythm. Even students who are excited to be back may come home *ired, emotional, quiet, extra hungry, or a little overwhelmed.

That’s normal. ❤️

This week, families can help by:

💤 Getting back into consistent bedtime routines
🎒 Preparing backpacks and clothes the night before
💬 Asking simple questions like, *“What was one good thing about today?”*
❤️ Giving kids some downtime after school
📚 Remembering that routines take time to learn
🐾 Reassuring them that they belong and that their school is a safe place to learn, grow, and make mistakes

A little extra patience goes a long way.

Your child doesn’t need to have everything figured out during the first week—and neither do you!

We’re so glad to have our Tigers & Cougars back.
Thank you for partnering with us to make this a great year! ❤️🖤

Wednesday Wisdom:
The goal of the first few weeks isn’t perfection—it’s connection, consistency, and belonging.

🎒 Every Day Matters: Understanding Chronic Absence

Regular attendance is one of the most important factors in student success. This year, Clatskanie School District is continuing to focus on helping students attend school consistently and ensuring families have support when barriers to attendance arise.

A student is considered chronically absent when they miss 10% or more of the school days in which they are enrolled. This includes both excused and unexcused absences. Missing just two days of school each month can add up to chronic absence over the course of a school year.

Why does it matter? When students miss school regularly, they miss more than assignments. They miss classroom instruction, discussions, opportunities to practice new skills, connections with teachers and peers, and the routines that help them feel connected to school.

We also understand that students get sick and families sometimes face circumstances that make attendance difficult. Our goal is not to encourage students to come to school when they are ill. Instead, we want to partner with families early when attendance becomes a concern.

Families can help by:

Making school attendance a priority whenever students are healthy.

Scheduling appointments and vacations outside of school hours/days whenever possible.

Establishing consistent bedtime and morning routines.

Communicating with the school when your child will be absent.

Reaching out early if transportation, health, anxiety, family circumstances, or another barrier is making regular attendance difficult.

Our goal is for every student to attend at least 90% of their enrolled school days.

Every day at school is an opportunity to learn, connect, and grow. Every day matters, and every student matters. ❤️🖤

Wednesday Wisdom: Reset the Routine ⏰🎒

The first day of school is almost here! One of the best ways to make the transition back to school easier is to start getting back into a school-day routine before September 1.

🌙 Move bedtime a little earlier. Even 15–20 minutes every few nights can make a difference.

⏰ Practice school-morning wake-up times. Sleeping until noon feels great in August…but not so great when that first school alarm goes off!

🥣 Bring breakfast back into the morning routine. A consistent morning meal can help students start the day ready to learn.

🎒 Create an evening “ready spot.” Pick a place for backpacks, shoes, jackets, and anything that needs to head out the door in the morning.

📵 Start winding down screens earlier. A little screen-free time before bed can help everyone settle in for the night.

You don’t have to change everything overnight. Small adjustments now can make that first week of school feel a whole lot easier.

❤️🖤 We can’t wait to welcome our Tigers and Cougars back on September 1!
