What's cooking in Claverack? The Festival!

PRESS RELEASE:
The Claverack Free Libraryโ€™s first Cookbook Festival will be taking place Saturday, June 27 and Sunday, June 28, from 12 to 5 p.m. at the Churchtown Firehouse located at 2219 County Route 27, Hudson, New York.

This exciting new Hudson Valley event will feature more than 2,000 used and new cookbooks for sale, with all proceeds directly supporting the Claverack Free Library and its essential programs and services. As an important cultural center for our community, the library depends on local support to continue serving residents of all ages. The festival will also feature signings with exciting cookbook authors:
SATURDAY, JUNE 27, 1:00-3:00PM: Journalist, visual artist and James Beard award winning author, Susan Simon will be signing copies of her latest cookbook, The Cook and the Rabbi: Recipes and Stories to Celebrate the Jewish Holidays. Susan thinks of this book as โ€œโ€ฆHudson Valley Jewish, because the recipes are not only the food of my historic ancestors made with local ingredients, but they also include new dishes that pay homage to those ingredients.โ€
SUNDAY, JUNE 28,1:00-300PM: Brooklyn-based food creative, Victoria Granof will be signing copies of her latest cookbook, Sicily My Sweet, which was named a Best Cookbook of the Year by the Los Angeles Times. Victoria is a graduate of Le Cordon Bleu and has been called one of the 100 Most Inspiring Women in Food by Cherry Bombe.
โ€œCookbooks are more popular than ever, even with the rise of digital recipe apps, roughly 17.8 million cookbooks are sold annually in the United States. As a chef who has been collecting cookbooks for more than 30 years, I needed to edit, purge and donate books to make room for more cookbooks!! We are hoping to make The Claverack Free Library Cookbook Festival an annual event in the Hudson Valley,โ€ said Mona Talbott.

Columbia Countyโ€™s Revolutionary Kitchen Wars!

The Boston Tea Party wasn't the only time early Americans pushed back against unfair tea prices... โ˜•๏ธ Check out this story of rebellion against price gouging during the Revolution.

Right here in Columbia County, everyday citizens staged their own fierce protests during the Revolutionary War to fight back against skyrocketing prices and hoarded goods.

In 1777, Continental currency was rapidly losing value and wartime shortages were hitting local kitchens hard. When opportunistic merchants or Loyalists in the region began hoarding precious commodities like tea, rum, and sugar to drive up prices, local Revolutionary committees and frustrated residents refused to stand by.

In districts across Columbia County โ€” including Claverack and Kinderhook โ€” the "Committees of Safety" had strictly regulated the price of daily essentials. But when merchants ignored those rules and tried to profiteer, angry crowds (often led by formidable local women) took matters into their own hands.

They marched on the stores, seized control of the scales, weighed out the tea, sugar, or rum themselves, and forced the shopkeepers to sell at the fair, pre-war โ€œfixed price.โ€ It wasnโ€™t stealing โ€” it was community-enforced economic justice during one of the darkest years of the Revolution.

Economic survival was just as important as the battles being fought on the fields.

Today, you can explore this rich history in Kinderhook at the Mercantile at the Vanderpoel House, where the spirit of local heritage lives on through exhibits and stories from Columbia Countyโ€™s past.
