🎂Happier Birthdays Happen Here!

September is the National Council on Aging National Senior Center Month, and this year’s theme celebrates something that makes every year better: connection, purpose and community.

At the Clawson Senior Center, happier birthdays don’t start with cake – they start with the people you meet, the activities you enjoy, the things you learn and the friendships you build along the way.
Here’s to making every year a little richer. **Continue reading** to learn more about some of the great things we do, and the importance of partnering with city departments and organizations to support our older adult community members.

- The City of Clawson Senior Center offers.....

o Nutrition services, on-site four days per week at noon and once per month at the Clawson Manor, where residents gather over a meal in their community room.

o Outreach services to support older adult residents with referrals, state benefit applications, Medicare & Medicaid counseling, home care resources, partnership with St Joseph's Helpers for minor home repair and other services that promote safety, well-being, and aging in place.

o The Senior Center staff partner with the Clawson Police Department to check in on residents when requested as part of the police department’s COPS Care program. This service supports independence and safety for our older adult residents.

o Senior Center staff manage the lawn maintenance and snow removal program. This service supports aging in place for older residents who find it difficult due to age-related limitations to maintain their lawn or address snow removal. Residents must meet age and income eligibility requirements.

o The City of Clawson is licensed to facilitate Senior Planet AARP Older Adult Technology Services classes to older adult community members. These classes give older adults an opportunity to learn how to use digital devices and discuss related topics at no cost. In our October series, registered students will learn how to use a laptop and will receive a free laptop at the end of the 10-week course.

o The Senior Center is a space where adults can connect and access programming to address their physical and mental well-being by joining one of our chair exercise or yoga classes, join our weekly art group to express their artistic ability, learn a language through our partnership with the Spanish for Toddlers Montessori School, and have fun at one of our many themed events with neighbors, friends, staff, and make new meaningful life-long connections.

September Message from the MASC President:

Supporting the People Who Support Senior Centers

September is a month when many of us are celebrating the important role senior centers play in our communities. It’s also a good time to recognize that we don’t do this work alone.

Every day, senior center professionals rely on partnerships with businesses, nonprofits, service providers, health organizations, educators, and countless other community partners. These relationships help us expand programs, connect older adults with resources, introduce new ideas, and ultimately provide better service to the people who walk through our doors.

That same spirit of partnership is important to MASC.

As we prepare for the 2026 MASC Conference, “Built for What’s Next – Modern Tools. Human Impact.”, November 3–5, we are looking for vendors, sponsors, and partners who want to connect with senior center professionals from across Michigan.

And this is where we need your help.

Think about the organizations you work with in your own community. Who provides a service your members value? Who has been a great partner to your center? Who has a product, program, or resource that other senior center professionals should know about?
Invite them to join us.

Supporting MASC isn’t simply about putting a logo on a sign or setting up a vendor table. Sponsorships and vendor participation help us keep professional development accessible, create opportunities for senior center professionals to learn from one another, and strengthen the network of people and organizations working on behalf of older adults throughout Michigan.

It’s a pretty simple connection:

Support the professionals. Strengthen the centers. Better serve Michigan’s older adults.
You don’t need to make the sales pitch yourself. Simply share the conference information, make an introduction, or point a potential partner toward the MASC website. Sometimes a personal invitation from someone who already knows the value of their work is all it takes.
