We have to recognize a special young man that walked into the Firefighter Class at Claxton High School a few years ago. At the time he had no interest in being a volunteer firefighter. This would certainly change about halfway through his sophomore year of high school. He realized I can do this and another Evans County Fire family member was born. He passed his Firefighter 1 state written exam and then State practical skills year 1. The next year we tackled the Hazmat Awareness class and He passed the skills and test. By senior year he was attending just about every fire meeting there was and started working on getting his fire truck drivers permit through the state. The dedication to community, work , and school shows the kind of character this young man is. He graduated Claxton High School and graduated OTC college all in his senior year. He also volunteered to go to Brantley County to assist with the wildfires. Dawson Monroe we are proud of you. Congratulations.

Evans County Firefighters have been assisting with the Brantley County / Hwy 82 fire . Evans county has had firefighters here since Wednesday April 22, various rotations of Engines , water Tinders and a Brush truck. Currently our department has a two man squad firefighters and a brush truck attached to the Prineville Hot Shots from Oregon. We are working the “black” line against the “green” or not burnt side. They are cutting lines with chainsaws and hand tools through or division and we are wet lining any hot spots that Poke up during the day. Today we had 700 foot of forestry hose stretched through the woods. This fire is currently underground in spots where the litter has piled for years . Every day around 3 pm the “smokes” start to show. That is because the humidity is lowest in the afternoons. The issue that has to be managed now is when the pine needles and leaves fall out the trees that have burned already and make a new blanket of surface fuels to carry a new fire. All the new fuel has to do is find a stump burning underground holding heat and we have what they call a “reburn”. Still lots of work and watching and waiting but lots of different agencies local , state , and federal are all still work the fire.

What a week it’s been so far! Deployed units to assist South Ga , also a Structure fire on Hwy old 250 where the fire got into the attic, mutual aid was called from Claxton Fire department to set up a draft at local pond, Smith state prison was called mutual aid but was deployed to south Ga. So without hesitation Glenville / Tattnall Firefighters filled in the Gaps. Tattnall. Fire department also brought the Mobile Air filling trailer. Thank you to all who served! Not if that wasn’t enough we also assisted a film crew with some behind the scenes fire prevention while they done a little pyrotechnics. All was planed well and all went smoothly. We also had another brush fire that got out from a grill. In our Spare time we took a three day Extrication rescue class . All this while also trying to pick up and deliver all you guys generous Donations to the South Ga Firefighters. Thank you all for the support and prayers.

We packed the Engine with as much as we could hold and we are headed south to do our part.
From what we are hearing from down south I feel like after tomorrow’s drop day at Southern Family Medical in Claxton , I believe that will be enough supplies for us to get down to the area. I feel like with these conditions the fires will continue to be a problem all over. Evans county has had around 60 brush fires already this year. Thank you for your kindness and support for all the fire crews fighting any and all fires in Ga right now! Pray for Rain !

These photos are from today 4/22/26 - this fire in Evans County has been burning since 3/21/26. We stopped the fire from running on the surface fuels . The drought conditions are so bad and the fuel moisture below the surface is extremely dry. So the Ground fuels continue to burn below the surface. This fire has resurfaced three additional times since March 21. It’s incredible how it will go down almost underground and pop up in pockets. Examine these images and see how the root systems of these trees are completely burned away from way use to be the ground level. We wanted to show this to share just how important it is to not burn right now in these extremely dangerous fire drought conditions.
