A Fire Weather Watch is in effect from Saturday morning through Saturday evening for all of northeast, north central, and east central Kansas, as conditions are expected to remain favorable for rapid fire growth. South winds will increase to 15 to 25 mph, with gusts up to 35 mph, while relative humidity values drop as low as 12 percent. This combination of strong winds, very dry air, and dry fuels means any fire that develops could spread quickly and become difficult to control. Outdoor burning is not recommended. A Fire Weather Watch indicates that critical fire weather conditions are possible, so continue to monitor forecasts for updates and potential Red Flag Warnings.

A Red Flag Warning is in effect until 8 PM CDT this evening for areas along and west of the Kansas Turnpike due to a combination of low relative humidity, strong gusty winds, and very dry fuels. These dangerous fire weather conditions will continue into Friday, with another Red Flag Warning in place from noon to 9 PM CDT for all of northeast, north central, and east central Kansas. Today, winds will shift from the southwest to the northeast at 20 to 30 mph, with gusts reaching up to 40 mph, while relative humidity values drop between 20 and 30 percent. On Friday, north winds of 10 to 20 mph with gusts up to 30 mph will combine with even drier air, as humidity levels fall as low as 14 percent. Under these conditions, any fire that develops can spread rapidly and become difficult to control. Outdoor burning is strongly discouraged. A Red Flag Warning indicates that critical fire weather conditions are either already occurring or imminent. Stay alert for updates and take precautions to prevent fires.
