I know you're all thinking the same thing... "What would we do without Facebook Chatter?" 😊
As your Town Marshal, I wanted to share a few thoughts about side-by-sides, golf carts, and the best ways to reach law enforcement.
First, I love seeing our community out enjoying the nice weather. Whether you're on a golf cart, side-by-side, bicycle, or just taking a walk, it's great to see families and friends making memories. I own a few of those "toys" myself, so I understand why everyone enjoys them.
Someone recently made the comment, "It's all about who you know." Like many things in life, relationships do matter. If you know me, you know I'm pretty easygoing, and some of you would probably say, "Thank goodness for all the warnings!"
That said, officer discretion isn't about playing favorites. It's about looking at the total situation. Is someone making an honest mistake and willing to learn? Are they respectful and trying to do the right thing? Or is it someone who repeatedly ignores the law and puts others at risk? Those are the kinds of things we consider. My goal has always been education first when appropriate, while also keeping our community safe.
I simply ask everyone to operate safely, follow the laws, and be respectful of your neighbors so we can all enjoy our town together.
Social media has become a great way for neighbors to share information, and Facebook Chatter can certainly be helpful. If you have questions or just need general information, don't hesitate to reach out to me. Those of you who know me know I'm always willing to help. If we haven't met yet, I'd be happy to talk with you anytime. The best way to form an opinion about someone is to have a conversation with them.
I also encourage everyone to attend our Town Council meetings. Come with an open mind and a positive attitude. We may not always agree on everything, but we're all working toward the same goal—making our town the best it can be.
One important reminder: Facebook posts, comments, Messenger, Chatter, and other social media platforms are not reliable ways to report crimes, suspicious activity, or request police assistance. We don't always see messages immediately, especially after hours. If you need to report something or would like an officer to respond, please call our dispatchers. They do an outstanding job of getting information to the right people, and even if I'm not on patrol at that moment, they'll make sure I receive the information so I can follow up.
If you have an emergency involving police, fire, or EMS, always call 911. For non-emergency situations, please use our dispatch or non-emergency number. That's the fastest and most reliable way to get help.
I truly appreciate everyone who looks out for our community. By working together, making responsible decisions, and using the proper ways to report concerns, we can continue making this a great place to live. Community resources like Facebook Chatter can be valuable when they're used the right way, and they've even helped generate ideas for improvements and things we can look into for our town.
Finally, I know not everyone agrees with every law—whether it's helmet requirements or other regulations—but they're still the law. As always, I'll continue to use good judgment and reasonable discretion when appropriate. My goal isn't to write tickets whenever possible; it's to educate, build relationships, and keep everyone safe.
