In recognition of Women’s History Month, today we're honoring retired Sergeant Catherine McAvoy.

Sergeant McAvoy became a policewoman in 1962. She went on to become one of the first female Road Sergeants in New York State. Sergeant McAvoy served with the Syracuse Police Department for 22 years before retiring.

We want to thank Sergeant McAvoy for her dedication, courage and the impact she made on policing here in the City of Syracuse, and across the State of New York.

I ask for courage- Courage to face and to conquer my own fears.
Courage to take me where others will not go.
I ask for strength - Strength of body to protect others.
I ask for dedication.
Dedication to do my job.
To do it well.
Dedication to my community.
To keep safe and please Lord, through it all be at my side.
