Memorial Day marked the unofficial start of summer and a reminder of the importance of safe driving. The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported that this year, eight people lost their lives and 99 others were injured in 234 traffic crashes on Missouri roadways over the holiday weekend.

Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for American teens. The period between Memorial Day and Labor Day is also known as the "100 Deadliest Days" because crash rates increase significantly, especially among teen drivers. Let's change the statistics this year!

Parents can help by:
- Setting clear driving rules and expectations
- Requiring seat belt use on every trip
- Limiting distractions such as cell phones
- Talking about the dangers of speeding, impaired driving, and drowsy driving
- Modeling safe driving habits every day

Teens:
- Buckle up every trip
- Put your phones away while driving
- Never drive impaired or ride with an impaired driver
- Speak up if a driver is taking unsafe risks
- Stay alert and watch for hazards

A safe summer starts with responsible choices behind the wheel. Together, we can help prevent crashes and save lives.

Our Officers were honored to join our law enforcement partners from across the region for yesterday's Law Enforcement Torch Run. Officers helped carry the Flame of Hope 23.5 miles from the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department South Patrol Division to Overland, spreading awareness, encouragement, and joy along the way.

The relationship between law enforcement and Special Olympics is truly special. It’s built on respect, friendship, encouragement, and a shared commitment to inclusion and opportunity for every athlete.

This year marks the 40th anniversary of Missouri law enforcement agencies' support for Special Olympics Missouri (SOMO). What began in Missouri in 1986 as a 30-mile run has grown into an 11-day relay covering more than 950 miles with over 1,000 runners statewide. Officers will continue to carry the Flame of Hope across Missouri to Kirksville, where tonight, it will light the cauldron at the opening ceremony of the 2026 Special Olympics Missouri State Summer Games.

The Law Enforcement Torch Run (LETR) is more than a run. It is a movement that brings communities together in support of athletes with intellectual disabilities.

Thank you to all of the runners, athletes, volunteers, organizers, and community members who continue to support Special Olympics Missouri. Your encouragement and support help make events like this possible. We are proud to stand (and run) alongside you as Guardians of the Flame!

More than 5 out of 10 people killed in Missouri traffic crashes in 2025 were not wearing a seat belt. Even with today’s vehicle safety technology, seat belts remain your best defense in a crash.

The Clayton Police Department is joining law enforcement agencies across Missouri for the “Click It or Ticket” enforcement campaign to help increase seat belt use and reduce serious injuries and fatalities on our roadways.

Did you know?
✔ Buckling up in the front seat can reduce your risk of fatal injury by 45% in a passenger car.
✔ Seat belts and air bags are designed to work together, not replace one another.
✔ Missouri teens ages 15–18 are required by law to wear a seat belt and can be stopped for not buckling up.

No matter how short the trip is, always:
✔ Buckle up in the front seat
✔ Buckle up in the back seat
✔ Buckle up every trip, every time
