The Clayton School House was built in 1860 and was used as a school building consecutively for 103 years. The two-story structure, built of native limestone, served primary and secondary grades. Once the school closed in 1963, students from town were bused to attend school in Garnavillo. The building was then used as a town hall and community gathering place. In 1974, the Clayton School was added to the National Registry of Historic Places. Prior to the school’s sequential celebration in 2013, the Clayton School Alumni Association and volunteers compiled historical artifacts, organized open house events, and applied for grants which allowed them to fund the historically accurate replacement of the school’s roof & windows.
