The Town of Clayton joins our community in mourning the passing of Allen L. Mims Jr., a longtime public servant whose commitment to Clayton helped shape the community we know today.
Mr. Mims served for 20 years on the Johnston County Board of Commissioners, including terms as Chairman and Vice Chairman. But his service to Clayton extended well beyond elected office. He was involved in the Clayton Planning and Zoning Board, Clayton Rotary Club, Clayton Chamber of Commerce, and other civic organizations throughout Johnston County.
One of his most lasting contributions can be seen at The Clayton Center. Allen and his late wife, Lee, were founding members of the Clayton Cultural Arts Foundation and were instrumental in the effort to preserve and restore the historic Clayton School auditorium. As chairman of the Clayton Auditorium Renovation Capital Campaign, Allen helped lead a community fundraising effort that raised $2.1 million toward the auditorium’s restoration. Allen and Lee were tireless advocates for the project and also made a substantial personal contribution. In recognition of their generosity and commitment, the auditorium stage was named in their honor.
Today, thousands of people continue to gather at The Clayton Center for performances, celebrations, meetings, and community events in a space that exists in large part because people like Allen Mims believed it was worth preserving.
His legacy is reflected not only in the positions he held, but in the institutions, relationships, and community investments he helped build over decades of service.
We extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing and serving alongside him. Clayton is better because of his commitment to this community, and his impact will be felt for generations to come.
