Some of the most important work in public safety happens without ever being seen.

At Kittcom, our dispatchers are the first point of contact on someone’s worst day. They gather critical information, make split-second decisions, and keep things moving so responders can do their jobs effectively. Every call matters, and they treat it that way, whether it’s routine or life-threatening.

This week is National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week, and it’s a chance to recognize the people who keep everything connected when it matters most.

To our partners at Kittcom: your work makes a difference every single day, even if it often happens out of the spotlight. We’re grateful for your professionalism, your focus, and your commitment to this community.

Seven years ago today, the world lost a great man. Kittitas County Deputy Ryan Thompson was shot and killed in the line of duty. Ryan was more than a deputy — he was a husband, a father, and a dedicated member of our community. His courage and sacrifice will never be forgotten.

The Cle Elum Police Department honors his service and legacy today and always. We ask our community to join us in remembering Ryan and to keep his family in your thoughts.

We celebrated the life of former Cle Elum Police Chief Sam Krahenbuhl who passed away February 24, 2026. He served the community for 24 years with over half of those years as Chief of Police. Sam loved his family, especially his wife Karen who passed away in March of 2024. Sam was blessed to work at the Cle Elum Police Department with the person he loved most. Sam leaves a legacy of what it truly means to be a small town Police Officer.

Pictured below are former Chief Scott Ferguson, former Chief Kirk Bland, and current Chief Rich Albo along with Sam Krahenbuhl. All three Chiefs knew Sam well and continued passing down the tradition of community based policing.

Rest easy Sam, we have the watch from here.

*****UPDATE 1:40 pm 2/17/26******
Since this report was posted, a detective has conducted a follow-up interview with the juvenile who made the initial report. During that interview, some different details about what occurred on Saturday emerged (2/14). Based on the information we have now, the Kittitas County Sheriff’s Office does not believe an attempted abduction or other crime occurred, and we are not looking for suspects related to this report.

We understand and appreciate the level of concern this generated in the community. We also ask our community to be gracious toward this young person and her family. Our focus is on safety, learning, and moving forward.

Any follow-up from here will be handled appropriately and privately, consistent with juvenile matters. We appreciate those who shared information and looked out for one another.
