At approximately 8:00 PM Tuesday evening, Clear Lake Fire Department was dispatched to a single-vehicle rollover collision. The vehicle had left the roadway and came to rest on its side in a ditch.

One occupant was inside the vehicle. Crews responded to assess the patient and secure the scene.

This incident is a good reminder that distracted driving doesn’t always involve a phone. Reaching for something, adjusting controls, eating, or simply taking your eyes off the road for a few seconds can be enough to cause a serious crash.

A few seconds with your eyes off the road can change everything. If something can’t wait, find a safe place to pull over first.

🚒 AUGUST CALL RECAP 🚑

August kept your Clear Lake firefighters busy!

From August 1–30, Skagit County Fire District 4 responded to 28 calls for service throughout our community:

🚑 10 Medical Calls
🔥 11 Fire/Investigation Calls
🚗 4 Motor Vehicle Accidents
⚠️ 3 Hazmat Responses

Some calls were routine, others were a little more… interesting…but every one of them meant someone in our community needed help.

Behind those 28 calls are volunteer firefighters dropping what they’re doing, heading to the station, and responding when the tones go off.

🔥 A quick end-of-summer safety reminder: A full burn ban is currently in effect. Even as temperatures begin to cool, vegetation remains extremely dry and fire danger is still a concern. Please follow all current burn restrictions and continue to use caution with equipment, vehicles, ci******es, or anything else that could create a spark. 🔥

“You can’t park there.” 🛻💨

All jokes aside, yesterday Clear Lake Fire responded to a vehicle that struck a 500-gallon propane tank, causing it to leak propane.

Crews responded to secure the area and mitigate the hazard created by the damaged tank. Propane is highly flammable, so incidents like this require careful scene management to reduce the risk of fire or explosion.

Fortunately, crews were able to safely address the incident.

Safety reminder: If you smell propane or suspect a gas leak, leave the area immediately, avoid anything that could create a flame or spark, and call 911 from a safe location.

And maybe give the propane tank a little extra room when you park. 😉

Yesterday afternoon, Clear Lake Fire responded to a reported brush fire in the 12700 block of E. Lake Drive.

Crews arrived to find a fast-moving fire burning in brush and trees on the hillside above a residence. The fire grew to approximately .6 acres, prompting additional resources to respond. Four residents were evacuated from a nearby home as a precaution.

With assistance from the Washington State Department of Natural Resources and additional responding agencies, crews were able to stop the fire’s forward progress. A helicopter was initially requested but was canceled once crews had the fire under control.

We appreciate the quick response and coordinated effort of everyone involved in keeping the fire from spreading further.

As we continue through the dry season, please use extra caution with anything that could create a spark or ignite dry vegetation.

Yesterday evening, District 4 volunteers responded to a single-vehicle collision on Gunderson Road near Larson Lane and Otter Pond Drive.

Our volunteers arrived to find a passenger vehicle that had left the roadway and collided with a tree. Firefighters worked alongside our responding partners to assess the scene and provide care to the occupant.

Incidents like this are an important reminder of how quickly an ordinary drive can change. We’re grateful for the coordinated response of everyone involved, and our thoughts are with the individual involved and their loved ones as they recover.

Safety Reminder: If you come across a motor vehicle collision, be aware of your surroundings before approaching. Downed power lines may not always be obvious. Always treat downed lines as energized, keep a safe distance, and never attempt to drive over them.

🔥 Structure Fire Response 🔥

This afternoon, Clear Lake Fire Department responded to a reported residential structure fire in the Clear Lake area.

Crews arrived on scene and quickly brought the small fire under control, preventing further spread.

While crews were committed to the fire, one Clear Lake crew was called away to investigate a report of smoke in another part of the district.

We’d also like to thank Sedro-Woolley Fire Department for assisting our community by handling an aid call while our resources were committed.

Thank you to our firefighters for their work today and to Sedro-Woolley Fire Department for helping ensure our community remained covered. 🚒

🔥 Burn Ban Update — Effective August 12
Please review the updated burn restrictions from the Skagit County Fire Marshal’s Office below and help us keep our community safe.

🔥BURN BAN UPDATE🔥

Due to the continued risk of fire and the commitment of shared firefighting resources to ongoing wildland fire response efforts across Washington State, the Skagit County Fire Marshal’s Office is implementing a complete burn ban effective Wednesday, August 12, 2026, at 12:01 a.m.

The burn ban prohibits all outdoor open burning in unincorporated Skagit County. The only exception is agricultural burning, which may continue only when conducted in accordance with applicable state and local regulations and any required permits.

Propane fire tables and other gas-fueled cooking appliances are permitted during this ban. Self-contained wood pellet grills and cooking devices are allowed only when placed on a concrete or other non-combustible surface. Charcoal grills are permitted. Charcoal and ash must be disposed of in a metal container and thoroughly soaked with water. The container should be kept at least ten feet from vegetation or combustible materials for 72 hours.

If you are within the limits of an incorporated city or town, check with your fire department for current burning restrictions.

🚧 SR 9 ROAD CLOSURE – AUGUST 12–19 🚧

Heads up for anyone traveling on SR 9 east of Mount Vernon this week.

Beginning Wednesday, August 12 at 6:00 PM, both directions of SR 9 will be fully closed just south of Mount Vernon Big Lake Road (milepost 49) while WSDOT installs a new fish passage.

📅 Closure: Wednesday, Aug. 12 at 6 PM through Wednesday, Aug. 19 at 6 AM
📍 Location: SR 9 just south of Mount Vernon Big Lake Road (MP 49)
🚗 Detour: SR 534 → I-5 → SR 538/College Way

The signed detour is approximately 25 miles point-to-point, so please plan ahead and allow extra travel time if you normally use this section of SR 9.

For those in our community, please also keep the closure in mind when planning your travel and always yield to emergency vehicles along detour routes.
