Public Service Announcement - Scam targeting Churches and their members.

On 03/11/2020 The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office received a report from a local church in the Alvarado area that members had received scam text messages requesting they go purchase Ebay gift cards for a person that was ill in the hospital with cancer. The scammer had the victim’s telephone number and names and made contact through text message. The scammer identified themselves as the Pastor of the Church and then asked the member to please go purchase gift cards for the person in the hospital. The scammer sent a series of two to three text.

Thankfully the members that have been approached realized by the second text message it was a scam and did not respond to the text message asking them to purchase a gift card. After the scammer did not receive a response no further communication or request occurred. The scammer texted both victims from (830) 637-6439.

Scammers are constantly trying to find a new way to scam their victims. Scammers have a tendency to research their victims and they love to prey on good hearted law abiding citizens. Scammers typically research an organization and have just enough information to make their initial contact seem legit. They commonly identify themselves as a person of authority or as Clergy. Scammers often pretend to be from the IRS or Social security Administration.

So what can a person do to protect themselves…

Never conduct any type of business with gift cards or money wire transfers. Legitimate businesses do not require a person to send gift cards or use money transfer services. Never give your personal bank or credit card information over the phone. Never give your personal identifiers, such as driver’s license or social security number over a phone. Do not put your telephone number on social media profiles. Scammers will often research their victim’s page to gather as much information as possible. If you receive a text from someone asking you to wire money or purchase a gift card, do not respond. If you think the text is coming from a friend, take the time to verify the number. Anything that advises you have won money, but needs you to send money to pay for taxes or fees before the money can be sent to you is a SCAM.
Last but not least… Keep church directories or other professional directories stored in a secure location. These items offer a great deal of information and should be protected with the same level of care you would use to protect other personal items.

On this date 49 years ago we lost a Brother. Deputy George Robinson was killed in an accident when his patrol car collided with a farm animal as he responded to an emergency call. The accident took place on Highway 174 in Cleburne near Blackwood's Airport.

The collision caused his patrol car to leave the roadway and it landed in some other nearby wrecked cars, causing it to not be easily seen. After Deputy Robinson failed to respond to radio calls other deputies were sent to search for him. The accident scene was found several hours later.

Deputy George Robinson was remembered today at a breakfast hosted by the Johnson County Sheriff's Office. The guests of honor were Deputy Robinson's daughters, Peggy Chandler and Shirley Jordan, his daughter-in law, Wanda Robinson, granddaughter, Teresa Cox and grandsons, Joe and Jeff Robinson.

Teresa's father, Sergeant Robert Robinson (Son of George Robinson) was a Corsicana Police Officer who also lost his life in the line of duty.

We salute the service and sacrifice of these two great men! They are not forgotten.

Thank you JCSO for shutting down the party/rodeo on Marianna Way. I don't mind people having fun especially in these times but when the noise vibrates the walls 3+ acres away it becomes annoying
Why are there gunshots always going off between 67 and 35 in Alvarado? We stay at the RV resort and are ALWAYS hearing gunshots, not knowing where these shots are being aimed??? There are way too many people in this area for folks to be shooting haphazardly on their property at all hours, including AFTER DARK! Y’all need to please look into this!!! It is ridiculous
