Congratulations to Senator Kent Smith and State House candidate Davida Russell on advancing in your primaries!

In Ohio’s heavily gerrymandered legislative districts, both of you are now *overwhelmingly* likely to represent the CH-UH community in the next General Assembly.

Thank you both for running on pro-public education platforms and for being shoulder-to-shoulder with us as we fight the good fight in Columbus for Fair School Funding! We need you and we know you’re with us!

Kent Smith & Davida Russell for State Representative

I heard about this student-organized protest and went up to the high school to walk out with them. Standing on the lawn, I saw students taking turns at a megaphone, delivering speeches to their classmates who raised their collective voices in response.

While time in the classroom is crucial for our students, it is important to remember that there are also valuable lessons to be learned on the front lawn of the school that aren’t being taught by the adults.

I was very proud of our kids today.

Heights Plays the Grog Shop is one of my favorite district events! It’s so great to see so much talent on display at a Cleveland Heights institution. Thanks to Kathy and the Grog Shop team for hosting!

On Tuesday the CH-UH school board (led by Vice President Gabe Crenshaw) passed a resolution declaring a state of food emergency for the children and their families in our school district who were participating in the SNAP (aka food stamp) program prior to the government shutdown — imposed by our federal government operating under a single party’s control.

Below you can find my remarks in discussion from Tuesdays board meeting regarding this vital declaration (the full text of which is linked below in screenshots).

Kids cannot learn when they are hungry. As a community we must come together to support our neighbors in need because they are being ignored by our leaders at the top. You can contact Senators Bernie Moreno and Jon Husted to share the impact of this shutdown, but frankly - they aren’t listening.

Please - community - band together to help fill the gaps left by our nations ineffective leadership. As Tiffany Scruggs (from the Greater Cleveland Food Bank) and our district’s own Nancy Peppler shared, there are ways to get involved locally.

If you are in need, you can reach out to the Greater Cleveland Food Bank’s help center by calling 216-738-2067 to be connected with food resources.

If you are a district family in need, please call 216-320-NEED (6333) to connect with the Heights Family Resource Center staff.

I will add ways to donate in the comments of this thread, should you have the capacity.
