Today, our Cleveland Heights community came together to honor the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our nation.

Memorial Day is more than a long weekend or a tradition - it is a solemn reminder that the freedoms, rights, and democratic ideals we cherish have been protected by Americans willing to give their lives for something greater than themselves.

This day is especially personal for me as the granddaughter of two Army veterans β€” one who served during World War II and another who served during the Korean War after immigrating to the United States. Their service shaped my understanding of patriotism, duty, and gratitude for the promise of this country.

At a time when our nation can feel deeply divided, today was also a reminder that our democracy depends on all of us - on service, civic responsibility, and a shared commitment to one another and to the ideals that bind us together as Americans.

Thank you to everyone who joined us today in remembrance and reflection. It was an honor to share remarks about what this day means to me.

May we always honor the memories of those we lost not only with words, but through lives of purpose, service, and community. πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡²

Tonight I had the honor of attending the Cleveland Heights End of Watch Ceremony β€” a solemn and meaningful reminder that behind every badge is a human being who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to others.

We gathered as a community to remember and honor our city’s four fallen officers: Norman C. Reker, Edward Betram Connolly, Thomas F. Patton II, and Jason West. Their courage, service, and sacrifice will never be forgotten.

As we reflect on their lives and legacies, we also hold close the families, friends, colleagues, and loved ones who continue to carry both pride and grief every day.

May their memories always be a blessing, and may we continue striving to build a community worthy of the sacrifices they made to protect it. πŸ’™

Being a mom has changed the way I lead, listen, and show up every day. It has taught me that the small moments matter, that patience is powerful, and that building a better future starts with how we care for one another every single day. Also, negotiating with a toddler is futile regardless of your excellent diplomacy skills. πŸ˜‚ Moms just get stuff done. We are a powerful part of our families and our communities.

Today I’m especially grateful for the women who show up with strength, love, sacrifice, resilience, humor, and heart - often all before 8 a.m. πŸ’ͺ

To every mom, stepmom, grandmother, aunt, caregiver, and mother figure: thank you for the countless ways you make our families and communities stronger.

Happy Mother’s Day πŸ’

Pardon our Dust

The Cleveland Heights Fitness Center gymnasium is getting a much-needed facelift after years of use. This week, the floors are getting sanded down and refinished. The outcome will be beautiful, but the dust and smell may be irritating to some.

Sanding could last through Friday, May 8th. Masks will be provided at the Community Center for those who are sensitive to the smell or dust; bringing noise-cancelling headphones or earbuds is recommended during this period for those sensitive to loud sounds.

After sanding, the floors will receive a new coat of polyurethane, which, as it cures for the next few weeks, will emit an odor. In 2-3 weeks, the floor will be ready for open basketball hours!

In addition to the floors, the City is replacing two small bleachers in the gym. The old bleachers have been removed, and the walls are currently being repaired and painted.
We look forward to many years of basketball, pickleball, volleyball, and more in the refurbished gym!

πŸ™Œ Road season has arrived! πŸ™Œ

🚧 Road construction season in Cleveland Heights officially begins TODAY!
Mayor Jim Petras is proud to announce that, with unanimous Council approval, the City of Cleveland Heights has increased its road resurfacing budget from $2 million to $5.1 million in 2026, paving the way for the city to increase the roads it resurfaces from 11 last year to 27 this year.

In addition to road resurfacing, Public Works has added two more streets crews to the one it normally dispatches. All three will be focused solely on pothole repair. Throughout the spring and summer months, residents and business owners should expect to see three crews across town tackling the unusual number of potholes that formed this winter due to heavy snowfall, deep freezes, and increased salt application, all of which causes road degradation.
