Sheriff Rick Kelley, K-9 Deputy Zack Lathem and K-9 Jelly, Deputy Mark Steinkraus, and Accreditation Manager Amber Donaldson enjoyed meeting so many local families. 🚨 NATIONAL PREPAREDNESS MONTH: DON’T JUST PREPARE—STAY PREPARED!
You built the kit. You stocked the pantry. You made the plan.
But preparedness isn't something you do once and forget about. Your supplies, information, and family needs change over time.
Before National Preparedness Month comes to an end, take a few minutes to give your emergency preparations a checkup:
🥫 ROTATE YOUR EMERGENCY FOOD & WATER
Check expiration and best-by dates. Use older items in your regular meals and replace them with fresh supplies. Don't forget medications, pet food, batteries, and other items that may expire or need replacing.
📋 UPDATE YOUR EMERGENCY PLAN
Has anything changed? Review:

❄️🧊 NATIONAL PREPAREDNESS MONTH: PREPARING NOW FOR WINTER WEATHER TO BE READY WHEN IT DOES COME 🧊❄️

Snow may not be an everyday occurrence in White County, but winter storms, freezing temperatures, snow, and ice can create dangerous conditions quickly.

A little preparation now can make a BIG difference when winter weather arrives!

🏠 PREPARE YOUR HOME

Before winter weather is in the forecast:

💧 Protect exposed pipes from freezing and know how to shut off your home's water supply.
🔦 Have flashlights, batteries, and backup lighting available.
🔋 Keep phones and portable battery banks charged.
🥫 Maintain several days of food, drinking water, medications, and other essentials.
🐾 Don't forget food and supplies for your pets!
🧥 Have plenty of warm clothing, blankets, and sleeping bags available in case you lose heat.
📻 Have more than one way to receive weather and emergency alerts.

⚡ BE READY FOR POWER OUTAGES

Ice can accumulate on trees and power lines, potentially causing extended outages.

🔥 Never use a grill, camp stove, generator, or other fuel-burning equipment inside your home, garage, or other enclosed area. Carbon monoxide is colorless, odorless, and can be deadly.

🏠 If using a fireplace, wood stove, or other approved heating source, make sure it is properly maintained and used safely.

🚨 Make sure your home has working smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors.

🚗 AVOID TRAVEL WHEN CONDITIONS ARE DANGEROUS

Snow is only part of the problem. ICE can make roads extremely hazardous—even when a roadway looks clear.

🧊 Watch for ice on bridges, overpasses, shaded roads, hills, and less-traveled roadways.
🚗 If officials recommend staying off the roads, please do so whenever possible.
📏 If you must travel, slow down and leave plenty of additional distance between vehicles.
🎒 Keep a winter emergency kit in your vehicle with blankets, warm clothing, water, snacks, a flashlight, phone charger, first-aid supplies, and other essentials.

⚠️ NEVER approach a downed power line. Always assume it is energized and report it to the appropriate utility or 9-1-1 if it presents an immediate danger.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 MAKE A WINTER WEATHER PLAN

Ask your family:

❄️ What will we do if school or work closes early?
❄️ Who will pick up the kids if conditions deteriorate?
❄️ What will we do if we lose power overnight?
❄️ How will we safely stay warm?
❄️ Do we have enough medications and necessities to stay home for several days?
❄️ Who should we check on—especially older family members, neighbors, or others who may need assistance?

📱 Most importantly, stay informed. Winter weather conditions can change quickly. Monitor trusted weather sources and local public safety information before and during the storm.

During severe weather, emergencies, and disasters, our 9-1-1 dispatchers may experience a significant increase in calls. **Knowing who to call—and when—helps keep 9-1-1 available for people facing immediate emergencies.**

Call **9-1-1** when there is an immediate threat to **life, safety, or property**, including:

Community Helpers at Mt. Yonah Elementary! 👮‍♂️🐾

The White County Sheriff's Office enjoyed partnering with Mt. Yonah Elementary School for their Community Helpers event, helping Pre-K and Kindergarten students learn what our K9 Deputy and their School Resource Officer, Deputy Ramey, do every day to keep them and our community safe — with a little help from Champ!

From patrol car tours to trying on real gear, our little learners asked great questions and made some new friends. Thank you to the teachers, staff, and students of Mt. Yonah for having us!

🌧️🌀 NATIONAL PREPAREDNESS MONTH: BE READY FOR TROPICAL CYCLONES & FLOODING

You don't have to live on the coast to be affected by a tropical cyclone. White County, GA can experience dangerous rainfall, flash flooding, strong winds, downed trees, power outages, and hazardous road conditions from tropical systems moving inland.

🌧️ BE READY FOR HEAVY RAIN & FLOODING
Even areas that have never flooded before can experience flooding after several inches of rain.

✅ Know whether your home, workplace, or regular travel routes are in a flood-prone area.
✅ Never drive through a flooded roadway. Turn Around, Don't Drown!
✅ Remember that water can hide washed-out roads, debris, and damaged bridges.
✅ Be especially cautious near creeks, rivers, low-water crossings, and areas with poor drainage.
✅ Move vehicles, outdoor equipment, and other valuables to higher ground when flooding is expected.
✅ If you live in a flood-prone area, know where you will go before water begins rising.

🌀 PREPARE FOR A TROPICAL SYSTEM
Before the storm arrives:

🔋 Charge phones, battery packs, and other essential devices.

If a Flash Flood Warning is issued for your area, act immediately. Don't wait for the water to rise around your home or vehicle.

🚗 NEVER attempt to cross a flooded road. Just 12 inches of moving water can sweep away a small vehicle, and deeper water can carry larger vehicles away.

🌊 Remember: Turn Around, Don't Drown!

For White County families, preparedness isn't just about hurricanes at the coast. Tropical weather can travel hundreds of miles inland and bring dangerous conditions right here at home.

When an emergency happens, it’s not the time to figure out what to do. Make your family’s emergency plan now—and make sure EVERYONE knows it!

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Get the whole family involved:
✅ Decide where you will go if you need to evacuate.
✅ Choose two safety locations—one close to home and another outside your immediate area in case your neighborhood is unsafe.
✅ Pick an out-of-area emergency contact. If local phone lines are overloaded, an out-of-area contact may be easier for family members to reach and can help everyone stay connected.
✅ Make sure everyone knows the contact’s name and phone number.
✅ Decide how your family will communicate if you become separated.
✅ Plan for children, older adults, pets, and anyone with special needs.
✅ Keep important emergency information somewhere everyone can easily find it.

☀️🔥 KNOW YOUR HAZARDS: EXTREME HEAT, DROUGHT & WILDFIRE 🔥☀️

Living in the North Georgia mountains means enjoying beautiful forests, rivers, and outdoor spaces—but those same surroundings can present serious hazards when conditions become hot and dry.

Extreme heat, drought, and wildfire are connected. Extended periods of hot, dry weather can dry out vegetation, increase wildfire risk, and create dangerous conditions for people, pets, agriculture, and our natural resources.

🌡️ EXTREME HEAT — PREPARE BEFORE IT ARRIVES

Extreme heat can affect anyone, but some people are particularly vulnerable, including older adults, young children, people who work outdoors, and those with certain medical conditions.

Prepare by:
💧 Drinking plenty of water—don't wait until you're thirsty.
🏠 Identifying a cool place where you can go if your home becomes too hot.
☀️ Limiting strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day.
👕 Wearing lightweight, loose-fitting clothing.
🐾 Making sure pets have shade and plenty of fresh water.
👵 Checking on family, friends, and neighbors who may be more vulnerable to heat.

Never leave children, pets, or anyone else in a parked vehicle. Temperatures inside a vehicle can become dangerous very quickly.

💧 DROUGHT — CONSERVE & PREPARE

Drought doesn't always happen overnight. Extended periods of below-normal rainfall can gradually affect water supplies, vegetation, agriculture, and wildfire conditions.

Prepare by:
🚰 Conserving water when conditions are dry.
🌱 Following local watering restrictions when they are in place.
💦 Fixing leaking faucets and pipes.
🪣 Using water wisely for landscaping and outdoor activities.
📢 Paying attention to local drought and water-use information.

🔥 WILDFIRE — REDUCE YOUR RISK

White County's wooded and mountainous landscape can provide plenty of fuel for a wildfire, particularly during prolonged dry conditions.

Protect your home and family by:
🏡 Keeping leaves, pine needles, and other dry vegetation away from your home and roof.
🌳 Trimming branches and vegetation around structures.
🔥 Following local burn restrictions and checking conditions before burning.
🚫 Never leaving a campfire or outdoor fire unattended.
