Students from Walker Valley High School Honors and AP United States history classes recently visited our historic United Way building in Cleveland - once home to the famed Princess Theatre - for a hands-on tour of local history and storytelling preserved in architecture.

During their visit, students learned about one of the building’s most memorable features: a historic mural that honors Cleveland’s roots and community legacy, painted by Kevin Bate and titled CLEVELAND: FOUNDING FATHERS, FAVORITE SONS, OUTSTANDING DAUGHTERS.

🖼️ Their tour inspired us to revisit the history behind this remarkable piece of art and the individuals and themes it honors. We invite you to scroll through the photos to learn the meaning behind each panel and discover why these stories remain an important part of Cleveland's heritage today.

Thank you to these WVHS students and teachers for helping keep local history alive and reminding us that understanding our past helps shape our future.

Research shows that volunteering strengthens communities, builds meaningful connections, and even improves personal well-being. Here in the Ocoee Region, we've seen that impact firsthand through Day of Action, when hundreds of volunteers come together to support local nonprofits and create lasting change.

Huge thanks to our partners at Tennessee Valley Authority for volunteering their time and talents to refresh the Born Learning Trail activity signage at the Greenway Park! 🌳

Because of their hard work, families throughout our community can enjoy interactive learning experiences that encourage children and caregivers to learn, play, and explore together outdoors.

We’re also grateful to the Rotary Club of Cleveland - TN for funding this important project and investing in early childhood learning opportunities in our community.

The Born Learning Trail is part of United Way of the Ocoee Region’s Read United program, helping turn everyday moments into fun learning opportunities that build early literacy and school readiness skills. 📚

Thank you to everyone who collaborated to bring new life to this wonderful community resource! 💙
