Bradley County Stormwater Program

Bradley County Stormwater Program Let's improve the water quality of our community together!

The Bradley County Stormwater program was adopted by its local governing body through local ordinance, the program is implemented and enforced by the Bradley County Stormwater Division, a division of the Bradley County Planning & Inspections Department. Implementation of this this program enables Bradley County Government to comply with the National Pollution Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) p

ermit, a national water pollution prevention program established in 1972 by the Clean Water Act. Our main goal is to reduce the discharge of pollutants into the storm water system and thus protect the water quality of Bradley County.

๐ŸŒง๏ธ What is a SCM (Stormwater Control Measure)? ๐ŸŒฟ

Ever notice how rainwater rushes off roads, roofs, and parking lots during a storm? Without proper management, that runoff can carry pollutants, cause flooding, and erode streams. Thatโ€™s where SCMs come in!

A Stormwater Control Measure (SCM) is a system or practice designed to capture, slow down, filter, or absorb stormwater runoff before it reaches our waterways.

Examples of SCMs include:
โœ… Rain gardens
โœ… Detention or retention ponds
โœ… Bioswales
โœ… Permeable pavement
โœ… Underground stormwater systems

SCMs help:
๐Ÿ’ง Reduce flooding
๐ŸŒŽ Improve water quality
๐ŸŒฑ Protect streams and wildlife
๐Ÿ˜๏ธ Keep our communities safer and more resilient

Next time you see a pond near a neighborhood or plants designed into a parking lot, you just might be looking at a stormwater control measure working to protect your community and the environment!

๐ŸŒง๏ธ๐Ÿ’ง END OF MAY REMINDER: ONLY RAIN DOWN THE DRAIN! ๐Ÿ’ง๐ŸŒง๏ธ

As May comes to a close and construction activity ramps up ๐Ÿ—๏ธ, itโ€™s a great time to remember how easily stormwater can carry pollution off job sites and into our local waterways...no treatment + no filter= waterway pollution.

Construction runoff can pick up sediment, chemicals, trash, and oils ๐Ÿชจ๐Ÿงช๐Ÿ—‘๏ธโ›ฝ, all of which can harm rivers and streams if not properly controlled. Thatโ€™s why Best Management Practices (BMPs) matter!

๐Ÿ—๏ธ BMPs that protect water quality include:
๐Ÿšง Silt fences and erosion controls
๐Ÿšœ Stabilized construction entrances
๐Ÿงฑ Proper concrete washout areas
๐ŸŒฟ Covering soil and stockpiles
๐Ÿ‘€ Regular inspections and cleanup

๐Ÿ’ก Pollution Prevention Check: This week we challenge you to commit to atleast ONE action that can make a big impact: keep materials covered, fix erosion controls, clean spills immediately, or remind your crew: โ€œOnly rain down the drain!โ€

๐Ÿ‘‡ Quick question: What belongs in a storm drain? (Hint: only one answer is correct!)
A) Rainwater ๐ŸŒง๏ธ
B) Concrete washout ๐Ÿงฑ
C) Motor oil ๐Ÿ›ข๏ธ
D) Sediment ๐Ÿชจ

Drop your answer below and remember to help keep our waterways clean this season!๐Ÿ’ง

๐Ÿšง Construction sites can impact water quality, but with proper precautions and community awareness, we can reduce the damage.๐Ÿšง

๐Ÿ™Œ Be part of the solution:
Ensure your construction site has proper EPSC's installed before work begins
Report anything that doesnโ€™t look right!

๐Ÿ’ง๐Ÿšง CAN YOU SPOT THE RISK?

Imagine this:
It just rainedโ€ฆ ๐ŸŒง๏ธ
A construction site nearby has no barriersโ€ฆ
Muddy water is flowing toward the streetโ€ฆ ๐Ÿ˜ฌ

โ“ What happens next?
A) It evaporates
B) It soaks safely into the ground
C) It flows into storm drains and waterways

๐Ÿ—๏ธ Construction Site BMP Education Matters!

Best Management Practices (BMPs) are essential for keeping construction sites safe, compliant, and environmentally responsible. From controlling erosion and sediment to managing stormwater and waste, proper BMP education helps protect our communities and natural resources.

A well-trained crew isnโ€™t just building structuresโ€”theyโ€™re building sustainability into every project.

Letโ€™s stay proactive, stay compliant, and build better together. ๐ŸŒŽ๐Ÿ‘ทโ€โ™‚๏ธ

๐Ÿ“‹๐Ÿšง FROM PERMIT TO PROJECT: PROTECTING WATER EVERY STEP OF THE WAY
Did you know construction sites within the urbanized area might require permits and inspections to help prevent stormwater pollution? ๐Ÿ‘€

Hereโ€™s how it works:

1๏ธโƒฃ Apply for local permits
2๏ธโƒฃ (If >1 acre) Obtain TDEC permit coverage
3๏ธโƒฃ Submit erosion & sediment control plans
4๏ธโƒฃ Install BMPs (Best Management Practices) ๐Ÿ› ๏ธ
5๏ธโƒฃ Routine inspections during construction ๐Ÿ”
6๏ธโƒฃ Final stabilization after the project is complete ๐ŸŒฑ

๐Ÿ’ง Why all the steps?
Because even small amounts of runoff can carry pollutants into our creeks and rivers.

๐Ÿšซ No BMPs = higher risk for water pollution

๐Ÿ™Œ Good news: These measures help protect Bradley Countyโ€™s natural resources while allowing growth to continue responsibly.

๐Ÿ‘€ See a site that looks unprotected? Speak up!

๐Ÿ’ก Even small amounts of runoff pollution can:
โ€ข Cloud the water ๐ŸŒซ๏ธ
โ€ข Harm fish and wildlife ๐ŸŸ
โ€ข Disrupt natural habitats ๐ŸŒฟ
๐Ÿšซ Remember: Storm drains are for RAIN ONLY!
๐Ÿ‘€ See muddy water leaving a construction site? Thatโ€™s a red flag!

๐ŸŒฟ๐Ÿšง BUILDING WITH CARE

Construction is important for growth, but so is protecting our environment! ๐Ÿ’ง

Thatโ€™s why every permitted construction site is required to use BMPs (Best Management Practices) to control stormwater runoff.

๐Ÿ› ๏ธ Think of BMPs as the โ€œfirst line of defenseโ€ against pollution to:
โœ”๏ธ Keep soil in place
โœ”๏ธ Prevent muddy runoff
โœ”๏ธ Protect nearby streams and habitats ๐ŸŸ

๐Ÿ” Plus, sites are regularly inspected to make sure everything stays in compliance.
๐Ÿ‘€ Next time you pass a construction site, look for BMPs in action!
